Getting to know Literacy
Learners P-3
♦ Analysis: Teachers need to get to know the
  children in their classrooms in order to
  create a literate environment.
♦ Research: “Cognitive Assessments provide
  teachers with the ability to understand each
  student’s growth and challenges as a
  reader.” (Afflerbach, 2007)
Selecting Texts
♦ Analysis: Selecting the right texts for my students
  is crucial in helping them to become better
  readers. I must provide variety as well as varying
  levels.
♦ Research: Non-cognitive: I can do classroom
  observations and student interviews. Cognitive: I
  can use Reading Interviews and DIBELS
♦ Texts: Dot & Jabber, Junie B. Jones, Bear Snores
  On, Dr.Seuss, and Flat Stanley
Literacy Lesson:Interactive
Perspective
♦ Analysis and Research:
♦ “The goal is to help students become
  strategic readers and writers” (Laureate
  Education Inc. 2010i)
♦ Examples: I can use word walls, word sorts
  and K-W-L charts in the classroom.

♦ Analysis and Research: “Providing
  opportunity for students to respond to the
  texts read is vital in a literate environment”
  (Laureate Education Inc 2010g)
♦ Examples: I use response journals in the
  classroom.
