This document summarizes a study on the effectiveness of notifications in reducing the duration that websites remain compromised after being hijacked. The study analyzed 760,935 hijacking incidents identified between July 2014 and June 2015. It found that direct communication with webmasters increased the likelihood of cleanup by over 50% and reduced infection lengths by at least 62%. Browser warnings also correlated with faster remediation. However, 12% of sites fell victim to a new attack within 30 days, indicating some webmasters only addressed symptoms rather than the root cause. The study provides insights into how notifications can help webmasters remedy hijackings more quickly while also highlighting gaps in webmaster capabilities.
