The skeleton performs 5 basic functions: movement, protection, support, storage, and supply. There are two main groups of bones - the axial skeleton which forms the central column, and the appendicular skeleton which attaches to it. Bones are classified by shape into long, short, irregular, and flat bones. Joints allow movement and come in three types - immovable fibrous joints, slightly movable cartilaginous joints, and freely movable synovial joints. Key anatomical terms like anterior, posterior, superior and inferior are used to describe body positioning.
