Week 1 mood board and thumbnails
If you remember last term, we started our first Graphics brief, focussing on the
‘Typography’.
Remember, good ‘typography’ is an essential part of what we do as Graphic
Designers, and is key to our role as ‘communicators.
You have already complete 4 great pieces of Typography coursework, which are now
safely in your Portfolio’s, and so this next stage of your journey gives you the
opportunity to be really creative, and get stuck into your job as a designer.
‘calligram’
• noun
• plural noun: calligrams
• a word or piece of text in which the design and layout of the letters creates
a visual image related to the meaning of the words themselves.
Basically, this means representing a word ‘visually’ as
an image or picture.

3. Continue Thumbnail
Designs.
Home Learning: Complete your
Thumbnail designs
Using a PowerPoint document create a Callagram Mood
Board, tat you will be printing A3 in size.
Set up your document so that it is A3 in size as it will be
going on half of an A2 presentation board. You will need
to go into the ‘Page Set Up’ area and change it from ‘on
screen settings’ to A3.
When uyou have finished ‘SAVE’ and PRINT your work out. Remember
when you print, you will need to ‘tell the printer that you want to print
onto A3, so you wil need to change the PRINT SETTINGS TO A3!
Today, you have TWO tasks to
complete:
1. Select your word. You can
choose from the list on the
following slide, OR, you can
choose your own word.
2. Start designing possible ideas
for what will lead to a final
design. These are called
‘thumbnail’ design’ and are
little ideas leading towards
the one that you will
eventually choose.
Choose from the following words, or if you discuss
it with your teacher, you can choose your own:
• Spaghetti
• String
• Fade
• Explosion
• Chameleon
• Effervescence
• Ice Cube
• Music
• Burned
• Graffiti
• Giraffe
• Pineapple
• Avocado
• Fire
These are
examples of
what your
boards will look
like once you
have printed
your Mood
Board and added
your Thumbnail
Design sheet.
Today, I would like you to complete the Following:
1. Hand in any outstanding Summer work.
Remember, I gave you a sheet in July to
complete your Year 9 Large Letters and Hand
Drawn Alphabets. This counts towards your
GCSE, and should be added to your Portfolio’s
for Assessment.
2. PRINT and STICK down your Calligram Mood
Board onto a Board.
3. Complete your Calligram Thumbnail Design.
That you started with Miss May.
