Art by definition is a skill acquired by experience, study, or observation; a branch of
learning; the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the
production of aesthetic objects; and produced as an artistic effort or for decorative
purposes (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).
In Filipino, art is “sining” with the following definition (Diksiyonaryong Filipino):

Art is one of the humanities. Humanities are the branches of knowledge that concern
with human beings and culture. This also deals with analytic and critical methods of
inquiry derived from an appreciation of human values and of the unique ability of the
human spirit to express itself (Britannica).
Assumptions About Arts
Art is a form of creation. The creation
of a work of art such as enhancement of
beauty and artistry is bringing about of a
new combination of elements in the
medium. Creation is the re-formation of
these pre-existing materials. But don’t
make mistook art as nature. The
elements existed beforehand or created
by God is considered as nature.
Art is subjective. This is the point of the “beauty is in the eye of the
beholder.” This is use to express the fact that not all people have the same
opinions about what is attractive (Cambridge Dictionary).
Art involves experience. Art is an expression. Art conveys reality. Art
may be described by the term artistic expression and experience of (1) artist
in creating it, and (2) the critic or anyone else in viewing it. Moreover, some
assumptions are challenge such as art as reflecting states of the external
world, This, seems to be implicit in the core meaning of expression: the
outer manifestation of an inner state. Art as a representation of outer
existence has been replaced by art as an expression of humans’ inner life.
The concepts expounded made us look back in our past experiences with art. But
actually, even without reading the above-mentioned definition, art seems to be very
noticeable and identifiable for us. Art is part of our everyday life. But as we go along
with the course, we should have a perspective and picture on how are we going to
think and look forward on why study of arts and humanities is very important.

Challenge
Look for art that represents each assumption.

The Role of Humanities and Arts in Man’s Attempt at Fully Realizing His End
Art is always associated with creativity. In
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, creativity is a
facet of self-actualization or the top most
realization or fulfillment of one's talents and
potentialities, especially considered as a drive
or need present in everyone (Oxford
Languages). Here, Maslow breaks with the
practice of defining creativity in terms of
product. Most scholars (still) assume that
creativity is the process that results in
something novel and useful while on the
other hand, Maslow observes that
psychological health is not related to productive achievement. Instead, there is a
greater connection between psychological health and usual creativity.
Maslow defines creativity in characterological
terms, with cheerfulness and openness to new
experience. To Maslow, creative people are like
happy and secure. Creative individuals
overcome inhibition from themselves and
never succumb to it. “They are less
enculturated, less afraid of what others might
say, less afraid of their own impulses, more
self-accepting. Less controlled, less inhibited,
less planned, less willed. Nutty, silly, crazy.” as
explained by Joachim I Krueger Ph.D. , a
Professor of Psychology.
Other than Maslow’s idea, John Dewey has also
something to say about the full realization of
human being through arts.
Art was an integral part of human life even before the museum and institutional
history of art. Break between art and daily life happened when art was declared as
an independent field. Theories further distance art by presenting it as something
disconnected from daily experience.
In John Dewey’s Art As Experience (1934), aesthetic experience is presented as
integral to the organic completion of human nature, these works provide expression
of a now obsolete view of aesthetics as central to the understanding not of art alone
but of the human condition as well.
