The Rise of Conservatism
Background: Many historians have characterized the period
from the Great Depression until the 1970s as a period when
liberal politics were dominant. During this period, only
Eisenhower interrupted the Democratic hold on the White
House. The U.S. Congress remained under Democratic control
for the entire period with the exception of two brief two-year
periods in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Republicans only
finally regained control of the Senate in 1980 and of the House
of Representatives in 1994. As such, many Americans look at
the 1970s as the beginning of the rise of conservatism.
