INFINITIVEINFINITIVE
A form of a verb that generally appears with the word to and
acts as a noun, adjective, and adverb.
to + verb = infinitive
Examples:
to walk, to talk, to listen
FUNCTIONS:
NOUN: To fantasize was his only way out of a dreary life.
ADJECTIVE: The students showed a willingness to cooperate.
ADVERB: Some people are unable to adjust.
Oral: Identify the verbs and the infinitives in the following
sentences.
1.They showed me what ecological reserve to study for the
next few days.
2.We must always be ready to defend our environment.
3.We hiked up the mountain to look for new plants.
4.Other people garden to breathe in the fresh air.
5.They were proud to show their support of Mother Earth.
Verbs followed by an infinitive:
We decided to leave.
Tom agreed to help me.
He demanded to speak to Mr. Harris.
He expected us to attend the party.
Verbs followed by –ing (gerund):
I don’t mind telling you.
I suggest meeting her at the office.
I enjoy swimming with my friends.
Avoid giving unnecessary information.
SEATWORK: Gerund or Infinitive. Complete the sentences with
the correct form of the verbs.
1.Frank asked Helen out, but she refused ____________ (go).
2.Carla enjoys _________ (learn) about new places.
3.Peter hopes __________ (be) a film star one day.
4.Can you imagine _________ (meet) the president?
5.David hated _________ (act) in the play at school.
