Tag questions/ Question tags
Why do we use tag questions?
We use tag questions at the end of
statements to ask for confirmation.
•"Am I right?"
• "Do you agree?"
Forming the tag question:
Positive statement, negative tag
(+) (-)
You live in the USA, don’t you?
Negative statement, positive tag
(-) (+)
Toronto isn’t the capital of Canada, is it?
Special cases in forming the question tag:
• I am right,
aren’t I? (x am not I?)
•You have to go,
don’t you? (you do have to go)
•I have been answering,
haven’t I?
•Nothing came in the post,
did it? (nothing, nobody, etc=negative)
•Let’s go,
shall we?
•He’d better do it,
hadn’t he?
Let’s apply what you have
learned…
•Drill- write an incomplete
Tag question and somebody
to give the question tag.
Example:
Mia went home, answer?
Seatwork: Write the question tag to complete the
following.
1.He is still sleeping, _____________?
2.You go to school, ____________?
3.Let’s go for a walk, ____________?
4.We won’t be late, _____________?
5.Nobody called, ___________?
6.They will wash the car,_____________?
7.We must lock the doors, _____________?
8.I’m correct, ____________?
9.So you bought a car, _____________?
10.You wouldn’t want to invite my Dad, _____________?
