- 3. GLAUCOMA Glaucoma involves damage to the optic nerve, a part of the eye that transmits images to the brain.The condition often results from the buildup of intraocular pressure. Left ntreated, glaucoma can lead to vision loss and even blindness. There are two primary types of the condition. Open-angle glaucoma occurs when fluid does not drain from the trabecular meshwork of the eye, leading to an increase in pressure. Alternatively, angle-closure glaucoma results from a decrease in the space between the iris and the cornea. As the space narrows, fluid is unable to properly drain out of the eye.
