Looking back at your preliminary
  task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to
          the full product?
The preliminary task was done quite quickly and I’m not
particularly proud of the front page. However, I feel it
was a great way to start the coursework rather than just
jumping into the music magazine. I had the opportunity
of working with Pages again, after almost a year since
my Year 11 newspaper coursework, and get myself
familiarised with it again before so that when I started
the magazine, things were running smoothly.

The whole researching and planning process before
actually making the magazine also helped me a lot since
I learnt so many more things about magazine
construction and benefited from expert advice from the
editors of NME when we visited it as a class. When I
started making it, I feel I had a clear idea of what I
should and what I shouldn’t do due to experience
gathered when making the preliminary and from
researching and visits.
Maybe the factor that helped me the most
was that I had to have pictures taken by
myself on my preliminary task. This enabled
me to work with the camera and learn to do
things that would later come in handy when
shooting the pictures for my music magazine.
Getting the lighting and the background right
on the first time is quite tricky so it was
excellent to have tried to do it to a high
standard before.
I really enjoyed creating the contents page. I
made it colourful to fit with the age group and
added a suitable background for students. I
really got into it and maybe that’s what got me
the most excited about creating a contents
page for my music magazine.
I believe that the experience of having
already done a contents page before made
me aware of what I should include, how to
position the text and how to chose colours
that would be suitable for my target
audience.
In contrast to the school magazine’s bright,
playful contents page, I created a dark and
rocky one, matching my audience. Another
thing that the preliminary really made me
conscious of is the target audience. Whereas
I had been doing things before because I
they seemed right and appealing to me, I
started to question my decisions based on
the likes of my target audience.

What have I learnt from the preliminary task?
