A static IP address is manually assigned to a device and does not change, unlike a dynamic IP address which is automatically assigned by a DHCP server. Static IP addresses are useful if you don't want the address to change, such as for printers on a home network, remote computers that need to be remotely accessed, or to avoid interruptions to online gaming when the dynamic IP address changes.
