The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was created to protect Native American artifacts and human remains, and to repatriate them to the appropriate tribes. It requires federal agencies and museums that receive federal funding to inventory holdings of Native American remains and objects, notify tribes of any items in their possession, and return requested items upon request. The law aims to address the inappropriate display or storage of remains and sacred objects to give control back to tribes.
