The “New” Start Menu
 The Start Menu has been redesigned to embrace both
the Windows 7 and Windows 8 style of use
 The Start button now provides access to a list of items
as well as a smaller tile-based interface
 The larger tile-based interface is enabled by default on
convertible tablets that are in tablet mode

Modern Apps
 Modern apps no longer consume the entire screen
when in desktop mode
 Modern apps have a title bar with maximize, minimize,
and close buttons
 Software developers who have embraced the process
of writing apps for the modern interface may continue
to do so
 Classic desktop applications will behave just as they
always have

Switching Between Applications
 Users may switch between applications using the
traditional ALT + Tab key sequence
 This provides a thumbnail screen of the open windows
 Using the Windows Key + Tab will present a full screen
of thumbnails
 After releasing the keys, the screen stays up and the mouse
or touch can be used to select an application to switch to

New “Snapping” Features
 As with Windows 7, dragging a window to the side of
the screen makes it fill half of the screen
 The new twist is that snapping window to the left or
right now pops up a list of the other applications that
you may want to snap to the opposite side of the
screen
 Drag a window to the corner to have it fill only a quarter
of the screen

Multiple Desktops
 Windows 10 now supports multiple desktop
arrangements that you can switch between
 Use the “Task View” button on the taskbar or press
Windows Key + Tab to see a thumbnail view of running
applications
 Click the “New Desktop” button in the lower-right corner
 Drag applications from one desktop to another to see
those applications when you switch to a specific
desktop

The Action Center
 The Action Center will display “Toast” notifications for
system or application-related messages
 You can view a history of those messages by clicking
the Action Center icon in the System Tray
 The Action Center also provides a quick access to
frequently used tasks such as:
 Airplane mode
 Bluetooth
 Settings
 Brightness
 Location
 VPN

The Settings Interface
 Provides a more tablet-friendly interface for
configuration

Windows Hello
 Uses facial recognition, iris recognition or fingerprint
reader for logon
 Requires a special camera with infrared capabilities for
facial recognition to work
 Standard laptop webcams will not work

 Searching
 What is Cortana?
 Using Cortana with Voice Commands

Searching
 Click the Start button and begin typing to search your
machine and the Internet
 This provides enhanced Start Menu search capability
vs. Windows 7 and is similar to the Windows 8.1 Start
Screen search capability

 Cortana is the search assistant for text-based searches
of Windows
 Cortana also
recognizes
speech-based
searches and
commands

Using Cortana with Voice Commands
 Enable Cortana to listen for its “Wake-up” phrase “Hey
Cortana”
 In addition to search, Cortana can also control your
local machine using your voice commands
 Set reminders
 Check appointments
 Send email

Microsoft Edge
 The New Edge Interface
 Reading List
 Annotating Web Slides

The New Edge Interface
 Edge is a completely new browser from Microsoft
 It has a cleaner more Spartan interface
 Edge provides
compatibility with
modern websites
 Internet Explorer
is still available
when you need to
connect to legacy
websites and web
applications

Reading List
 Reading Lists enable you to save web pages and
articles for later reading

Annotating Web Slides
 Microsoft Edge allows you to annotate over live
websites

PowerShell 5.0
 The New PowerShell Prompt
 PowerShell ISE
 Other New Features

The New PowerShell Prompt
 The PowerShell prompt in version 5.0 has been
redesigned
 Support for standard paste keyboard shortcut CTRL +
V
 Pasted incompatible special characters such as slanted
quotes are automatically cleaned up and converted into
their command-line-safe equivalents
 Colorizes code as you type

PowerShell ISE
 Transcripts are now supported
 Edit and debug remote scripts

 OneGet for package management
 Manage network switches
 Zip and unZip files
 ConvertFrom-String and Convert-String
 Convert text based upon a pattern

 New-Item now supports symbolic links
 Provides the capabilities of mklink from cmd.exe
 Copy-Item allows copying of files between Sessions
 Enable Transcripts through a GPO
 To capture a transcript of all PowerShell commands
 Get-Clipboard and Set-Clipboard

Hyper-V in Windows 10
 Hot-add NICs and Memory
 PowerShell Direct
 New Checkpoint Structure
 New VM Configuration File Format
 Other New Features

Hot-Add NICs and Memory
 Add and remove network adapters and memory while
the VM is running
 For Generation 2 virtual machines only
 Works with Windows and Linux VMs

PowerShell Direct
 Execute PowerShell commands from the host to the
guest
 No network connection to the guest VM is required
 Firewalls are not an issue
 The host and the guest must both be running
Windows 10
 To open a PowerShell Direct session
 Enter-PSSession –VMName TestVM
 To run a command via PowerShell Direct
 Invoke-Command –VMName TestVM {Get-Service}

New Checkpoint Structure
 Production Checkpoints are now supported
 Volume Shadow Copy inside the guest is used to
provide the checkpoint
 Works with Windows and Linux VMs
 Provides for a more efficient checkpoint that does not
use a series of differencing disks that can grow
unchecked
 Standard Saved State checkpoints are still supported

New VM Configuration File Format
 VMs now have a new *.vmcx configuration file
 Instead of XML the new file is stored in a binary format
 This is more efficient for rapidly changing VM settings
and properties
 Directly editing the configuration file is no longer
supported

Other New Features
 The VM Integration Services components will now
install via Windows Update instead of from the Hyper-V
manager
 Integration Services updates are available for: Windows 7,
Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8 and Windows Server
2012
 VMs moved or imported from Windows 8.1 Hyper-V will
retain their VM configuration version
 This keeps the VMs compatible with Windows 8.1 Hyper-V
 To take advantage of new Hyper-V features, the VM
configuration must be updated from version 5 to version 6

 Secure boot for Linux
 Ubuntu 14.04 and later, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
 Connected standby now available with Hyper-V
enabled on Windows 10
