Introduction
This presentation discusses issues facing telecom across
Canada.
What is 5G?
PC Magazine – June 21, 2016
• 5G is a new network system that has much higher speeds and capacity, and
much lower latency, than existing cellular systems. The technologies to be used
in 5G are still being defined, but there <spanare< span="" style="box-sizing:
border-box;">some general themes everyone agrees on.</spanare<>
• 5G networks will use a type of encoding called OFDM, which is similar to the
encoding that LTE uses. The air interface will be designed for much lower latency
and greater flexibility than LTE, though.
• The new networks can use frequencies as low as old TV channels, or as high as
"millimeter wave," which are frequencies that can transmit huge amounts of data,
but only a few blocks at a time. 5G may also bring in Wi-Fi as a seamless part of
a cellular network, or transmit LTE-encoded data over Wi-Fi frequencies, which is
called <="" span="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">.

The U.S. has been warning other countries not to buy telecommunications gear from China’s Huawei
Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. The government will soon put real money behind the effort.
A new agency, called the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, plans to tap some of its $60
billion budget to help developing countries and businesses purchase equipment from other companies.
“The U.S. is very focused on ensuring there’s a viable alternative to Huawei and ZTE. We don’t want to be out
there saying no. We want to be out there saying yes,” Adam Boehler, the first chief executive officer of the
DFC, said in a recent interview.
He declined to discuss specific company talks or how the money would be spent. However, the plans would be
a welcome boost for Sweden’s Ericsson AB and Finland’s Nokia Oyj, which have struggled to compete with
Huawei and ZTE equipment that’s often cheaper and at least as capable. The U.S. could bankroll Huawei
alternatives through loans or loan guarantees to developing nations and companies, or even acquiring
minority stakes in emerging makers of competing gear.

Market Status – Issues facing 5G
• It has a lot of available bandwidth and should make it possible for wireless
devices to process data with minimal delays. But since its wavelengths are
much shorter, it is more easily obstructed. And because it has never been
used for consumer mobile services, carriers are still learning how 5G
signals will behave in different types of terrain and weather. “We need to
look at how the signals are affected by things like snow, rain, sleet, hail,
maple trees, oak trees, and spruce trees, because each of those will be
different,” says AT&T research engineer Bob Bennett.
• The problem: most 5G measurement equipment is so expensive, fragile,
and bulky that it can be deployed outdoors for only a few hours at a time. -
Bennett and colleagues say that far more real-world data is needed to
properly develop the technology, so they have created weatherproof radios
the size of toaster ovens and installed them across AT&T’s 260-acre
campus in Middletown, New Jersey, which was once part of Bell Labs.
2020 Market Outlook

PUNE, India, Nov. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2019 study has 246 pages, 121 tables and figures. The leading
vendors in the 5G market have invested in high-quality technology and processes to develop leading edge
monitoring and digital triggering activation capability. 5G is the most disruptive force seen in centuries. 5G
Market are going from $31 billion in 2020 to $11 trillion by 2026. It has more far reaching effect than a stronger
military, than technology, than anything.
5G markets encompass virtualization, cloud, edge, and functional splits. As 5G networks come on line in 2020,
they require increasing sophistication from mobile operators. The challenge going forward in mobile network
buildout is to bring together a growing number of LTE and 5G radio access technologies. A range of connectivity
services are needed. APIs are needed in each small cell to manage connectivity to a number of customer
sensors that are implemented in different segments.
The 5G sales at $31.3 billion in 2020 are forecast to reach $11.2 trillion in 2026. Networks spending has been
transformed from macro cell tower dominance to 80% of spending on infrastructure and equipment for 5G. 5G
supports wireless communications across short distances. All the indoor and outdoor places need to increase
wireless coverage, providing significant market growth for 5G.

Self-driving cars, remote robotic surgery, autonomous weapons -- all that and much more is set to be
delivered via the 5G wireless network, which promises to transform our lives and add trillions of dollars to
the global economy every year.
New products, services, business models and entire industries will be born as 5G provides a huge leap
forward in speed, capacity and connectivity.
Now economists are putting a number on the coming transformation, with IHS Markit estimating 5G will
drive an extra $12 trillion of annual sales in 2035. That’s about the size of China’s economy last year.
For consumers, the first changes will be faster mobile data speeds -- eventually up to 100 times quicker
than those of 4G, letting people download full-length movies in seconds. At work, the trend will be
greater automation of tasks and digital connectivity, driving a new wave of productivity gains for some
industries.

new-plan-to-improve-rural-broadband-855356657.html
WOODSTOCK, NB, March 15, 2019 /CNW/ - Rural Canadians will soon have access to faster
speeds and more data as Xplornet Communications Inc. makes historic investments in its
national broadband network, enabled by the Government of Canada's Accelerated Investment
Incentive.
Announced today by President and CEO Allison Lenehan, this bold new investment plan will
position Xplornet to deliver 5G wireless services nationally to rural Canadians.
"We have made unprecedented investments in our broadband network to offer more services to
our customers. Later this year, Xplornet will double the speeds we are able to offer customers to
50 Mbps," said Mr. Lenehan. "Then, we will fulfill our bold promise to offer 100 Mbps speeds to
rural Canadians by the end of 2020."
This investment will enable Xplornet, Canada's leading rural broadband provider, by the end of
next year, to provide 5G-ready wireless services across Canada, supported by new investments
in a fibre backbone capable of delivering speeds of at least 1Gbps.
The plan makes effective use of Xplornet's licensed 3500 MHz spectrum to provide rural
Canadians with 5G wireless services.

However, the plans would be a welcome boost for Sweden’s Ericsson AB and Finland’s Nokia Oyj, which have struggled to compete with Huawei and ZTE equipment that’s often cheaper and at least as capable. The U.S. could bankroll Huawei alternatives through loans or loan guarantees to developing nations and companies, or even acquiring minority stakes in emerging makers of competing gear.

  • 8. Market Status – Issues facing 5G • It has a lot of available bandwidth and should make it possible for wireless devices to process data with minimal delays. But since its wavelengths are much shorter, it is more easily obstructed. And because it has never been used for consumer mobile services, carriers are still learning how 5G signals will behave in different types of terrain and weather. “We need to look at how the signals are affected by things like snow, rain, sleet, hail, maple trees, oak trees, and spruce trees, because each of those will be different,” says AT&T research engineer Bob Bennett. • The problem: most 5G measurement equipment is so expensive, fragile, and bulky that it can be deployed outdoors for only a few hours at a time. - Bennett and colleagues say that far more real-world data is needed to properly develop the technology, so they have created weatherproof radios the size of toaster ovens and installed them across AT&T’s 260-acre campus in Middletown, New Jersey, which was once part of Bell Labs.
