WHERE TO FIND SOURCES FOR
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY
RESEARCH?
THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF RESEARCH:
PRIMARY RESEARCH AND SECONDARY RESEARCH
• Primary research is an original research conducted to collect
authentic data in order to answer specific questions. The researcher
can use a wide range of methods for this: interviews, focus groups,
direct observations, experiments, etc.
• Usually, scientists do a primary research after reviewing secondary
research or already collected primary raw data: they gain an insight
into an issue which is in the focus of their interests and start collecting
an original data.
ADVANTAGES OF PRIMARY RESEARCH
• If you investigate a small group of people, primary research will be quick
and economical;
• It is applicable if a research was done right;
• You can find out an answer to your research question;
• Information is up-to-date;
• Interpretation is better;
• There is no problem with copyright as you are the owner if the information
collected during primary research.
DISADVANTAGES OF PRIMARY RESEARCH
• Biases and inaccuracy – if a research was conducted not properly;
• High cost;
• Time-consuming;
• Surveys demand lots of human recourses, materials, etc;
• It is not immediately available because it takes time to identify a problem,
choose the most appropriate method, analyze and interpret.
• Secondary data research means using previously gathered data that
was collected for other aims and is publicly accessible. It is also known
as “desk research” when you interpret, analyze, estimate, discuss or
summarize primary data.
SECONDARY RESEARCH
ADVANTAGES OF SECONDARY RESEARCH
• Low-cost;
• Fast;
• Freely accessible primary data;
• Data is usually quite extensive and covers many issues that can lead to
valuable secondary data analysis;
• Sometimes it is the only way to research some issue (for example, in history:
you can’t go back in time so you analyze already existing historical
documents);
• It is the only way if need to analyze large-scale tendencies.
DISADVANTAGES OF SECONDARY MARKET RESEARCH
• You can’t check how accurately was gathered primary data and if it was
biased;
• Information can be outdated and not specific;
• It may not answer your research question;
• There can be problems with copyright: using someone else’s work without
permission might cause serious consequences.
WHERE TO FIND SOURCES FOR PRIMARY
RESEARCH?
Primary sources can be divided into 2 large groups: quantitative and
qualitative.
Quantitative data can be collected trough:
• Surveys (telephone, emails, in-house and face-to-face interview, online
surveys);
• Experiments;
• Field work;
• Controlled laboratory observations
Qualitative data is collected by conducting…:
• Focus groups;
• Depth interview (long and often biographical);
• Case studies;
• Ethnographies;
• Internet communications via blogs, newsgroups, and email.
• To find sources for secondary research, look through the references,
bibliography, links and cited papers. All these will lead to the primary
research and later can define secondary research methodology.
PRIMARY SOURCES INCLUDE
• historical document
• eyewitness accounts
• artifacts (for example, coins, plant specimens, tools, clothing, etc)
• audio and video recordings
• speeches
• diaries
• memoirs
• autobiographies
• statistical data
• art objects (for instance, paintings, sculptures, poems, novels, etc)
• letters
• newspaper articles
• authentic documents (for example, birth certificate, marriage license,
court transcript, etc)
• photographs
• secondary research report
• results from public opinion polls or market research
SECONDARY DATA COLLECTION MEANS
SEARCHING THROUGH…:
• magazine and newspaper articles
• dictionaries and encyclopedias
• book or movie reviews
• monographs
• internet – databases, periodical, newsletters, statistical data such as
demographical, blog postings – all these are good sources for analysis
of secondary data
• commentaries, criticisms
• patents and company annual filings
• social media data
• histories
• documentaries
• for secondary market research: sales records, customer feedbacks,
cost info, marketing activity and so on
• secondary research websites
• For relevant collection of secondary data, visit the library, go to online
sources (for example, US census, Data.gov, etc) or look through
journals, magazines, books or scientific reports prepared by
universities, government or other organizations.
Secondary sources are all around us and thanks to the Internet they
have become more available. Deeper information about these primary
and secondary research you will find in this Google book.
