Helps you understand what you have read because you have to figure out what the text is about, identify the most important ideas, and retell the ideas in your own words. Identifying the main ideas and supporting details in a paragraph, passage, or selection can help you summarize.
The topic tells what the story is about Main ideas are the most important information about the topic The main idea of a paragraph tells what the paragraph is about It may be stated in a topic sentence at the beginning or end of the paragraph. Supporting details give more information about the main idea
When I say “Go”, take 1 minute to preview the illustrations.  Skim text when previewing Ask questions before reading Use section headers to make predictions Ask yourself: What problem do you think the main idea of this article will be? On your index card, write your predictions.  After we listen to the selection, we will see if your questions were answered.
Read to find out… What happens when human communities expand into wildlife habitats? NOW…you will read along as we listen to….
Read pages 78 and 79 With your group, discuss the following question: What is the main idea of the first paragraph on page 79?  Where is it stated?  What are some details that support this main idea?  Let’s fill in the Main Idea Web.
Read pages 80 and 81 Summarizing nonfiction by finding the main idea and details can help you understand and remember what you read.  Tell how you would summarize the first paragraph on page 80.
Look at the map on page 81.  What does this map show?  What does it tell you about black bears?
What is the main idea of each section?  Give details to support your answers.
What clues help you figure out the author’s purpose for writing this article?
What is urban sprawl?
How are the people at Lost City School and wildlife experts around the country addressing their problems?
 
Share with your criss-cross/shoulder partner your questions. Were they answered?  What makes a group of people a community? TOMORROW WE WILL… Use our “Main Idea Web” to answer the Think and Compare questions on page 81.
Should we be able to build our homes anywhere we want, even if it means moving animals out of theirs? Why or why not?
