- 3. Seventh day Adventists- not Christians, and they appeal to the Bible for their beliefs
- 4. …they say, “from the beginning to end, and you will not find the word SUNDAY there.”
- 5. and so, they argue,.. IT SHOULD BE THE “SEVENTH DAY” (which does appear in the bible) that should be commemorated: the “7th day”, when Lord “rested” after finishing his work of creation (cf Gn. 2:3).
- 6. Is the argument valid? Let us examine it closely.
- 7. But before doing so, Let us ask if the Bible says anything about “ADVENTISTS”.
- 8. Now, to their argument, Genesis says that God rested on the “seventh day”, …without any mention of the “Sabbath”
- 9. It must be kept in mind that the names of the days of the week as applied to Genesis are mere speculation, …because no such names are given there, only numbers.
- 10. For the sake of argument: Let us agree that the Seventh day of Genesis was the Sabbath. Still, there is a question: how do we know that the Lord did not start his work on Tuesday, for instance in which case the “rest day” would have to be Monday?
- 11. Really, this is mere speculation and a word play.
- 12. SABBATH ….the Seventh day?
- 13. The seventh day was identified with the Sabbath much later when the week was given names and the Israelites were enjoined to observe a day of “rest” every week.
- 14. Rest (key word)= SABBATH - The word itself carries no connotation of religious service, only “REST” from work.
- 15. To “REST” on the Sabbath that is, on Saturday? -No problem with that for in modern society everybody rests on the Saturday; and this w/out any need for Biblical recommendation or approval.
- 17. 7th day of Genesis SABBATH (Jewish Tradition) was very important
- 18. “WAS” = “Jewish” part of the story came to an end with the appearance of the MESSIAH / CHRIST.
- 19. “JEWISH Part” = Preparation
- 20. with “CHRIST”, the story is now complete
- 21. For in Him, all the prophecies and promises made in the Old Testament were fulfilled.
- 22. and a New ERA was introduced: CHRISTIANITY, The Era of Christ.
- 23. As a Jew, Jesus respected the Sabbath. However: He warned against “Sabbath Idolatr y”. …taking the idea of rest, disregarding other more fundamental aspect of human behavior and religious devotion.
- 24. Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27)
- 25. Jesus went even further. He “rested” on the 7th day (The Sabbath) in the tomb.
- 26. …and then on the “First day” of a new week, HE ROSE FROM DEATH
- 27. Thus Christ substituted the “FIRST DAY” for the seventh.
- 28. …and thus an important day (the 7th) was put aside to give way to a much more important one (THE 1st)!
- 29. God created material world and in it, man and woman (Gen. 1:27). That was very good indeed!
- 30. However, “FIRST DAY” of Christ far excelled the original story, for it brought about a “NEW CREATION” in which man and woman are RE-CREATED as SONS and DAUGHTERs of God -entitled to a share in the Creator’s glory and blessedness forever.
- 31. CHRIST’S “FIRST DAY” brings a promise of a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH” again better and more lasting (forever) than the original ones.
- 32. On the strength of Jesus ressurection, and in the belief in and hope for a new creation, the Church decided from the very start to LET GO OF THE Seventh day / Sabbath.
- 33. …and HONOR THE FIRST DAY / SUNDAYand not just as a Day of rest, but also and especially, as the “day of the Lord.”
- 34. We are not jews who follow the “old mosaic law” …we are Christians who follow the Lord Jesus Law of love.
