Durham Technical Community College transitioned from Blackboard to Sakai as its learning management system. Sakai is an open-source LMS created by and for higher education. It was chosen after a thorough evaluation process involving pilots of Sakai and other systems. Durham Tech formed a committee with broad representation that recommended Sakai based on its many useful tools, group features, calendar, grading enhancements, and hosting flexibility. The college implemented an 18-month plan to train over 350 instructors on Sakai and provide ongoing support. By the end of 2013, the transition was complete with 331 instructors trained.

How did we choose Sakai? • In Fall 2009, Durham Tech formed an LMS team – Broad representation – 10 of 11 team members taught online and/or hybrid – Held open meetings • Evaluated Moodle, Sakai, and Blackboard 9 (which had not yet been released) • Piloted Sakai in Fall 2010; expanded pilot in 2011 • In 2011, revisited Moodle 2 • In late 2011, team made final report to the President, recommending Sakai • In Spring 2012, President announced decision to move to Sakai Durham Technical Community College
