- 2. So you’re making a thing? • • • • • • Well aren’t you the creative one Congratulations You’re great Your thing is great Go you But you’re not done yet
- 3. Questions to ask yourself • What’s your medium? Maybe you’re writing a book, drawing a webcomic, or making a tv episode. All represent characters differently • What’s you creative process? Everyone is different in the order they develop their story, some may start with the characters and for some they may get that figured out last • Are you Disney? are you a massive name brand movie company that can get away with throwing the same looking characters into different kinds of plot lines? If the answer is yes then you’re free to go
- 4. Target audience • • • • • Age group, ex: kids book vs adult Interest group, ex: sci fi vs romance That’s it Literally others will come if you do it right
- 5. Ways you benefit from writing diversely • More people find and buy your thing because they want to read about people like them • It helps with character development if you start off knowing your characters race and sexuality • Fan artists want to draw your thing more because drawing a bunch of white people is boring • Media will praise and worship you as a saint for not having a cast of straight white people • Free publicity for not being an asshat yay 4 you
- 6. How to include diversity • If you’re writing about cultures you’re unfamiliar with, research them thoroughly. The internet is a wonderful place, use it • Maybe you’re writing about a space adventure two hundred years from now. Humans evolve, the racism, sexism and homophobia will (hopefully) be much less present in the future. Write it that way
- 7. Write non white characters • Even if they’re well developed in your head as white • Changing how your character looks in writing isn’t hard. • Re-write a few sentences • Bam now they’re not • In a huge number of stories set in western societies race doesn’t even fucking matter making your character latino isn’t going to change his personality or character development at all get over yourself

Writing it wrong • There are more races than black and asian • Your story having one of each does not mean its inclusive • Don’t write that ‘token black guy’ who we all know was added as an afterthought when the author figured out the rest of the cast was all white • The annoyingly stereotypical gay guy • The ‘girl’ added to a action team of a bunch of guys and ends up with the male hero • The one black transgender disabled lesbian in an all cisgender straight white cast that is basically a bunch of minorities crammed into one character the author left out in everyone else
- 9. Great now you’re ready • Go forth and tell some wonderful stories • and make some rad and interesting characters that aren’t a bunch of boring white people • Seriously don’t it’s just mind-numbing at this point • 2014 people lets get a move on

Why you shouldn’t care • They can go fuck themselves • They literally have hundred of years of media and literature that was nothing but straight white males and their damsels in distress • Them actually reading something that doesn’t have a traditional white male protagonist will blow their tiny mind • go read twilight you whiny babies
