BACKGROUND
 March 27, 1845
 Germany
 In school he was not very successful
 Poly-Technical Institute in Zurich, Switzerland
 Mechanical Engineering
 Berthe Anna Ludwig
 Dr. August Kuntz
 Institute of Physics at the Wuerzburg University
Discovery of X-Ray Beams
 Wilhelm Roentgen was already working on
the effects of cathode rays during 1895,
before he actually discovered X-rays.
 November 8, 1895
 Totally dark room
 Well-covered discharge tube
 Barium platinocyanide
Cont
 Photographic plate to capture the image of
various objects of random thickness placed in
the path of the rays
 "roentgenogram“
 He declared that X-ray beams are produced by
the impact of cathode rays on material objects
 Scientists in many countries started to
experiment with these new rays, and progressive
doctors very quickly used them as a diagnostic
tool.
X-radiation (x-ray)
 Extremely short wavelength and high frequency
with wavelengths ranging from about 10−8 to
10−12 meter and corresponding frequencies
from about 1016 to 1020 hertz (Hz).
The Nobel Prize
In 1900 Professor Roentgen
accepted a position at the
University of Munich.
In 1901, Roentgen received
the first ever Nobel Prize in
Physics.
Later
 Röntgen refused to patent his discovery
and gave the money that came with the
Nobel Prize to his university.
 Röntgen died at Munich on February 10,
1923, from carcinoma of the intestine.
 In 2004, an element was named after him.
 Atomic Number: 111
 Standard Atomic Mass: 272 u
