• Wind profilers are extremely well suited to provide high
temporal and spatial upper-air data for airports that are
affected by complex terrain. These systems are used to
monitor the upper level flow above the terminal area in
support of wind shear and turbulence monitoring
Doppler Beam Swinging (DBS)
• Radial scattered velocities measured
with one vertical and 2 (4) off-zenith
beams
• Beam-pointing sequence is repeated
every 1-5 minutes
• Local horizontal uniformity of the
wind field is assumed
• Signal processing involves:
– coherent integration of the
complex video signal
– spectral analysis
– incoherent integration
– isolation of signal spectrum from

Active phased array antenna
Employing active phased array antenna enables us to measure
the wind profiles every one minute with its high-speed beam
scanning capability. And it assures us that stable and accurate
measurements are carried out even under high winds such as
typhoons, that were unattainable by radars using conventional
reflector type antennas.
Pulse compression technique
Employing the 16-bits pulse compression technique resulting in
the improvement of 12dB of the received echo signal to noise
ratio (S/N) compared to single pulse radars, enables us to
measure winds at high altitudes.

• Electrically switched phase delays
between the micro-patch antenna
elements change the pointing
direction.
• Each of the planar panels is
protected from direct exposure by
integral radome.
• The antenna used active phased array technique and consists of
planar micro-patch array panels with a sidelobe reduction screen.
• The antenna panels are oriented horizontally while the antenna
beams point to four orthogonal oblique directions as well as to
zenith.

temperature, virtual temperature can be
computed from the received signal
