Introduction to Networking
 Communication refers to the information transfer
and exchange between people, between people and
things, and between things through a certain medium
and behavior.
 Network communication refers to communication
between terminal the devices through a computer
network.
 The best definition of a computer network is two
or more computers or devices that are connected
together for the purpose of communication, sharing
information(Data) and resources.
23
Network & Networking
 Network is an Interconnection of
devices.
 Networking is the communication
between the interconnected devices.
October 1, 2024 Engineer Jama Abdulkadir 24
Types of Networks
 Local Area Network(LAN)
 Operate within a limited geographical location.
Like within a single building or a campus.
 Metropolitan Area Network
 Spans within a city
 MAN used by organizations, universities, and
government to interconnect their locations
within a city.
 Wide Area Network
 Operate over a large geographical location.
 It can connects networks of multiple cities, countries,
continents, or even the entire World. Example Internet.

Network Devices
 NIC: Network interface card . It forms an
interface between the networked device
(Computer) and the Ethernet (LAN)
 Switch: It is also used to connect all devices
on a network so that they can communicate with
each other.
 Router: Router is device which allows
communication between two or more
different networks present in different
geographical locations.
 Firewall: A firewall is a network security
controls incoming and outgoing network
traffic based on predefined security rule
October 1, 2024 Engineer Jama Abdulkadir 29
IP Addressing
Types of IP Address:
 Static IP address. Addresses that are
manually assigned and do not change over time
 Dynamic IP address: Addresses that are
automatically assigned for a specific period of
time and might change.
Two Versions of IP Addressing:
 IP version 4 – 32 bit addressing.
 IP version 6 – 128 bit addressing

LAN Network Can be either
 Workgroup Model or Peer-To-Peer Model
 Computers with similar capabilities and
configurations are referred to as peers.
 Peer-to-Peer network are computer systems that
are connected to each other over the Network.
 Without the use of a central server, files can be
shared directly between systems on the network
 Domain Model or Client/Server Model
 Each computer on the network is either a client or
a server.
 The clients asks for services like files from the
server.
Peer-to-peer networks are more commonly
implemented where less computers are involved and
where strict security is not necessary.
Client/server networks are more suitable for
larger networks

What is Domain, Domain
Controller and AD DS?
 Domain?
 Domain is a logical grouping of user, computer,
and group objects for the purpose of
management and security.
 You cannot have a domain without at least one
domain controller.
 Each domain is identified by a DNS domain
name.
36
What is Domain, Domain
Controller and AD DS?
 What is AD DS?
 Active Directory Domain Services database
stores information on user identity, computers,
groups, services and resources.
 AD DS domain controllers also host the service
that authenticates user and computer accounts
when they log on to the domain.
 What is a Domain Controller ?
 A domain controller is a server that is
configured to store a copy of the AD DS
directory database (NTDS.DIT) and a copy of
the SYSVOL folder.
 NTDS.DIT is the database itself, and the
SYSVOL folder contains all the template
settings for GPOs
37
Clients & Member Servers
 CLIENTS
 A computer joined in the domain with Client
Operating system.
 Client Operating systems like,
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10
 MEMBER SERVERS
 A computer joined in the domain with Server
Operating system
 Server Operating systems like
Windows server 2016, Windows server 2012,
Windows server 2008.

Servers

USER MANAGEMENT
 Computer User can be Either
 Local Users
 A user account created in local database of a
computer
 Local users are generally used in WORKGROUP
model
 Local users can login only on the respective
computer
 Domain Users
 A user account created in ACTIVE DIRECTORY
database.
 Domain users are used in DOMAIN model
 Domain users can logon to any computer in the
DOMAIN.
