• Types of WPT
• Advantages and disadvantages of WPT
• Future scope
• Conclusion
INTRODUCTION
• Wireless power is the
transmission of electrical
energy from a power source
to an electric load without
interconnecting man made
conductors
• Wireless transmission is
useful in cases where
interconnecting wires are
inconvenient , hazardous or
impossible
WIRELESS
POWER
TRANSMISSION
WHY NOT WIRES ???
• As per the studies , most
electrical energy transfer
is through wires and most
of the energy loss is during
transmission through
wires.
• On average , the loss is
more than 30% in world.
• In INDIA , the loss exceeds
40%.
• High cost and difficult
installation.
PROBLEM IN PRESENT SCENARIO
• Trillions of dollars spent on wires and
installation of electric poles.
• Estimated that 40 billions of disposable
batteries per year added to the e-waste
burden
WHY DO WE NEED WIRELESS ELECTRICITY
???
• The ever increasing power demand
• The need of electricity in every nook and
corner of the world
• The demand of eco –friendly power
• Requirement of efficient and reliable power
• To reduce dependence on wires and
batteries
HISTORY
• Sir NICOLA TESLA was the
first one to propose and
research the idea of
wireless power
transmission . He is
indeed the “FATHER OF
WIRELESS” .
• In 1899 , since than
many scholars and
scientists have been
working to make his
dream a reality.
HISTORY
• His vision for “world
wireless system”
• The 187 feet tall tower
to broadcast energy
• All people can have
access to free energy
• Due to shortage of
funds , tower did not
operate
HISTORY
He managed to light 200 lamps from a
distance of 40 kilo meters
THE FORGOTTEN INVENTION IS REBORN IN
2007
RESONANCE COUPLING
The idea of TESLA is
taken in to
research after 100
years by a team
lead by “MARIN
SOLJACIC” from
MIT
The project is named as “WiTricity”
TYPES AND TECHNOLOGIES OF WPT
Near field techniques
Inductive coupling
Resonant inductive coupling
 Far field techniques
 Microwave power transmission (MPT)
 LASER power transmission
INDUCTIVE COUPLING
• Primary and secondary coils are not
connected with wires
• Energy transfer is due to mutual induction
• It is preferred because it is comfortable
• Less use of wires
• Shock proof
RESONANCE INDUCTIVE COUPLING (RIC)
• Combination of inductive coupling and
resonance
• Resonance makes two objects interact very
strongly
• Inductance induces current
MICROWAVE POWER TRANSMISSION (MPT)
 Transfers high power from one place to
another. Two places being in line of sight
usually
Operates in the frequency range of 1-40GHz
Operates at the highest efficiency at 2.45GHz
 Steps
• Electrical energy to microwave energy
• Capturing microwaves using rectenna
• Microwave energy to electical energy
MICROWAVE POWER TRANSMISSION (MPT)
• AC cannot be directly converted to
microwave energy
• AC is converted to DC first
• DC is converted to microwaves using
magnetron
• Transmitted waves are received at rectenna
which rectifies, gives DC as the output
• DC is converted back to AC
on going research on wpt
• On 12th march ,2015 ,Japanese
researchers have successfully
transmitted electric power
wirelessly to an pinpoint target
using microwaves, an advance
that brings space-based solar
power closer to reality
• According to japan aerospace
exploration agency (JAXA) the
researchers were able to
transform 1.8 kilowatts of
electric power into microwave
and transmit it with accuracy
into a receiver located 55
metres away
advantages
• Efficient and reliable power
• Creation of a shock free environment
• Provides solution to the ever increasing
demand for power
• A solution to reduce e-waste a more safe
environment
disadvantages
•For short and mid range transfer system
has to be set at the right frequency or there
would be no power transfer
•For long range the installation cost is high
FUTURE SCOPE
In future transmission will be without wires.
It would be more efficient.
Low maintenance cost , but high initial cost.
Better than conventional wired transfer.
Energy crisis can be decreased.
Low power loss.
In near future , world will be completely
wireless.
Conclusion
• Wireless electricity is not just a great idea but an
urgent measure that has to taken to deal with the
current energy crisis
• We realize that wireless energy transfer & electricity
may play a significant role in the future in the field of
transmission of electric power
