What is wizard of oz
■ Wizard of oz technique was introduced by jeff Kelly during his PHd study in 1980.
■ Efficient way to examine user interaction with computers and facilitate rapid iterative
development of dialog wording and logic.
■ The technique requires two machines linked together.
■ First one is experimenter (the "wizard"), pretending to be a computer.
■ Second one is the user who put the queries either directly or by pressing functional
keys.
What is wizard of oz (cont.)
■ Make an interactive application without much code.
■ Front end interface.
■ Get feedback from user.
Movie clip
Movie clip (cont.)
■ User
■ User (john) who is calling on movie phone
application to try and find out when and where
movies are playing.
Movie clip (cont.)
■ Wizard
■ This man (kramar) who is playing
a wizard and behaving as if he is the
machine/computer.
VUI (Voice User Interface)
■ Wizard of oz technique got their start with speech user interface.
■ A speech user interface or voice-user interfaceVUI makes human interaction with
computers possible through a voice/speech platform in order to initiate an automated
service or process.
■ VUIs have become more commonplace, and people are taking advantage of the value
that these hands-free, eyes-free interfaces provide in many situations.
How Does ItWork?
■ The "virtual" receptionist answers incoming calls, greets callers and asks them who
they want to reach before transferring them. Depending on the instructions of the
called party and the importance of the call.
■ She" reads their voice messages and emails, calls their contacts, checks appointments
and schedules meetings for them, etc. Employees simply have to dial her phone
number or extension and ask her to assist them in their needs.
Example onVUI
■ VUI in mobile phones
■ Almost every smart hasVUI so that they are
trying to interact with speech to the user.
Example onVUI (cont.)
■ Even there are a lot of mobile chat
application in which you can create chat
with your partner/friend throughVUI.
Example onVUI (cont.)
■ The Amazon Echo Dot speaker uses the
voice user interface Alexa as the primary
form of interaction.
Why we needVUI
■ Voice user interfaces (VUIs) allow the user to interact with a system through voice or
speech commands.Virtual assistants, such as Siri, GoogleAssistant, andAlexa, are
examples ofVUIs.
■ The primary advantage of aVUI is that it allows for a hands-free, eyes-free way in
which users can interact with a product while focusing their attention elsewhere.

Editor's Notes

  • #5: The Wizard of Oz technique is an efficient way to examine user interaction with computers and facilitate rapid iterative development of dialog wording and logic. The technique requires two machines linked together, one for the user and one for the experimenter. The experimenter (the "wizard"), pretending to be a computer, responds to user queries either directly or by pressing function keys to which common messages have been assigned. The software automatically records the dialog and its timing. This report provides a detailed description of the initial implementation of the Oz paradigm using microcompu~ers, and a summary of previous applications on other machines. Implementation guidelines, emphasizing potential pitfalls and enhancements not currently included in the literature, are also presented.
  • #10: However, VUIs are not without their challenges People have very little patience for a "machine that doesn't understand" Therefore, there is little room for error: VUIs need to respond to input reliably, or they will be rejected and often ridiculed by their users Designing a good VUI requires interdisciplinary talents of computer science, linguistics and human factors psychology – all of which are skills that are expensive and hard to come by Even with advanced development tools, constructing an effective VUI requires an in-depth understanding of both the tasks to be performed, as well as the target audience that will use the final system The closer the VUI matches the user's mental model of the task, the easier it will be to use with little or no training, resulting in both higher efficiency and higher user satisfaction
