Working With Exploring Students: Case Studies University of Southern Maine Workshop Creator: Jim Peacock Director Advising and Career Center Kennebec Valley Community College [email_address] George Steele Director of E-Student Services University Systems of Ohio [email_address]
Overview Review case studies and break into groups Collectively propose critical questions and issues Groups will report out critical questions and issues Second meeting to develop a plan for your case study student Group will report out your plan for your case study student
Case Studies Case Study 1: Parent Interfering Case Study 2: Impulsive Decision Maker Case Study 3: Competitive Program – Lack of Skills
Guidelines Treat all cases as if it is the first time you are meeting with the student. Assume you are a typical advisor with limited resources. (you decide as a group what is typical). Think about this case in the time frame of “they have time to make this decision or solve this problem”. This is NOT an exercise in solving the problem in 1 or even 2 sessions only. If you give the student an assignment to do something, you can assume they will do it and return with the assignment completed. Select a RECORDER to put your work on flip chart Select 2 REPORTERS to report out your work.
Group Tasks I. YOU WILL HAVE 20-30 MINUTES TO DEVELOP THE FOLLOWING: A] Open ended questions & closed ended questions to learn what the issues are and what the student wants. B] List of any assignments you want the student to complete C] Review the students assignments D] Develop a plan for the student based upon your second meeting. You will have to make up information as needed here. A] How would you and the student arrive at a plan? B] What is the plan? Noting short term and long term aspects if appropriate. II. EACH GROUP WILL REPORT OUT TO THE ENTIRE GROUP
Case Study One Father comes in with his daughter with the goal to convince you and his daughter that she should go for a business degree. He is adamant that business is the only way she is going to make any money and he doesn’t want to pay for her education unless she majors in business.
Case Study Two Michael is in his first semester at your college and taking 4 courses; College Writing, a 100 level Math class, Communication, and Psychology. Michael comes in to see you the week before registration begins and says, “I need to change my major to something that I can make a lot of money. I don’t care what it is, but I want to get it changed and register for classes.
Case Study Three Jordan is a part time student wants to get into a nursing degree program that requires a lot of math and science, but who has tried for two semesters to pass Pre-algebra and can’t do it. Jordan has also struggled with the Anatomy and Physiology course.
