This document provides instructions for conducting an affinity storming session to develop goals for a Graduate Design Network. The process involves two main activities: 1. Brainstorming - Group members spontaneously generate ideas without censorship on post-it notes. 2. Affinity diagramming - The group organizes the ideas generated during brainstorming by sorting the post-it notes into common theme groups. Headers are created to describe each group. The session is conducted in steps where ideas are first generated, then displayed and sorted into related groups to identify key goals. The output will be an affinity diagram capturing the essential goals of the network.

- 2. GOAL Develop and identify key goals of our Graduate Design Network.
- 3. METHOD 1 Brainstorming The spontaneous and uncensored contribution of ideas from all members of the group. This will happen though a loosely organized activity where group members propose ideas.
- 4. Here are some main points to remember: - Spontaneous generation of ideas - Free your creativity - Without censorship
- 6. METHOD 2 Affinity Diagramming: Organize and sort your ideas into groups with common themes. At first your groups might be very large, but these post its can be organized into subgroups. Choose titles for groups that cover the main idea of why they are grouped together.

- 9. STEP 1: Generate Ideas on post-its.
- 11. You can write a word or a phrase that explains your idea.
- 13. Talk and listen to each other, bounce ideas.
- 14. Generating ideas should be rapid. Don’t over think it.
- 15. Every idea is a good idea! Plus you’ll have 5 minutes per question.
- 17. Don’t throw away any ideas. If it pops into your head, put it on a post it!
- 19. Be open to others ideas. Enjoy the process. Embrace the ridiculous – Crazy is good!
- 20. STEP 2: Display the ideas. Post the ideas on the wall in a random manner.
- 22. STEP 3: Rapidly sort Ideas into related groups.
- 23. Start by looking for ideas that seem related in some way and group these post-its together.
- 25. Continue sifting through the post-its and establish new groups as you start to see new relationships between concepts.
- 26. Look for small sets within larger groups and ask yourself “should these belong in a larger group? or should they become their own group?”
- 27. Step 4: Combine your diagram with another group.
- 28. Create header cards that captures the essential link between the ideas in the group.
