Editor's Notes

  • #5: More bandwidth for more applications: Cisco’s 802.11ac wave 2 solution will be able to deliver data rates of 2.34Gbps. far exceeding the previous generation of 802.11ac by 80% (Note: Previous Gen APs supported 1.3Gbps.) This is enabled by MU-MIMO, 4 Spatial Streams and operating on the160MHz band. Increased Scale and Coverage: 802.11ac Wave 2 allows for a fourth spatial stream it enables higher scale and better coverage. Better Client Battery Life: Faster transmission means that clients can send data faster so they can more effectively save battery in the devices. Improved Client Density Support: Multi-user Multi-In / Multi-Out (MU-MIMO) enables the access point to service multiple clients simultaneously where in previous version the AP would only service clients individually. This means the slowest client on the network does not limit you because the AP can service multiple clients simultaneously. Cisco’s 802.11ac wave 2 solution will be able to deliver data rates of 2.34Gbps. far exceeding the previous generation of 802.11ac by 80% (Note: Previous Gen APs supported 1.3Gbps.) 802.11ac wave 2 will become the recommended access technology for organizations that place high value in having a mobility solution – 89% of companies say they have a company wide or specific mobility initiative (Source: Cisco 2014 Mobility Landscape Survey) 802.11ac wave 2 will drive network refresh not only for Wi-Fi but for access switching and routing It will also serve as the foundation for key employee and customer experience mobility initiatives for revenue pull through.
  • #6: You will need to target this upsell to enterprise and upper commercial customers to be successful. This upsell will also work for mid-market, especially for BYOD. The four vertical market segments most suited for this upsell are: education, financial services, healthcare, and professional services.
  • #7: So why is Wave 2 even faster? Several key technology improvements provide a big boost in performance—up to 80% faster speeds than Wave 1. Let’s take a brief look at each of them.
  • #8: First off, Wave 2 supports something called multi-user MIMO. Multi-user MIMO makes a performance and efficiency difference when the APs are transmitting to client devices that also support 802.11ac Wave 2. And those Wave 2 clients are expected to enter the market this year.   Multi-user MIMO is important because it allows access points and their many antennas to transmit to multiple client devices all at one time. That helps maximize air-time efficiency so that each client, regardless of what version of 802.11 it is running, gets the amount of airtime it’s supposed to get based on the technology supported. Whether that client supports 802.11ac, 802.11n, or an older version of the standard.   Wave 1 supported single-user MIMO, whereby the AP transmitted to each client one at a time quickly and efficiently. Now, with multi-user MIMO, the limitation of one lower-speed client won’t hold back AP downlink throughput.
  • #9: Better Coverage and Performance - Than 802.11n, AC Wave 1 802.11ac Wave 2 (Dual Radio, 80MHz) 4X4 MIMO 1.7Gbps Max Data Rate 5GHz PHY (2.15 Gbps Max Rate Rate 5GHz, 2.4GHz) Improved Client Performance 5GHZ: 4x4, 3 SS MU-MIMO and 4SS SU_MIMO – 4X4 3SS MU-MIMO means that an app can send data to multiple devices simultaneously – SU-MIMO – AP sends data to devices one at a time. Transmit beam-forming – Native 802.11adc Beamforming only service 802.11ac devices (Client Link is Cisco proprietary and services all legacy devices) – Improves battery life on Smartphones and gtablets Faster Offload to Wired Network 2 Gbe Ports Quickly Expand Functionality USB 2.0 Allows you to add integrated BLE support or 3G/4G Modem support for Primary or back WAN connectivity
  • #10: Better Coverage and Performance - Than 802.11n, AC Wave 1 802.11ac Wave 2 (Dual Radio, 80MHz) 3X3 MIMO 870 Mbps Max Data Rate 5GHz PHY (1.17 Gbps Max Rate Rate 5GHz + 2.4GHz) Spectrum Intelligence Improved Client Performance 5GHZ: 4x4, 3 SS MU-MIMO and 4SS SU_MIMO Transmit beam-forming Faster Offload to Wired Network 2 Gbe Ports Quickly Expand Functionality USB 2.0 Allows you to add integrated BLE support or 3G/$G Modem support for Primary or back WAN connectivity
  • #13: Cisco’s Best Practices ON by default Internet only Guest Access Controls Application Visibility Clean Air and intrusion detection Band Select Radio Resource Management Client Profiling Bonjour Service Directory Best practice default settings
  • #14: Hardware Protection – No Need to Rip and Replace Access Points Change Management Protection – No Need to Reconfigure Feature Protection - Same APs as Large Enterprise
