DESIGN THINKING ACTION LAB
ASSIGNMENT - WEEK:1

TASK: SUPPOSE YOU HAVE BEEN HIRED TO RE-DESIGN THE STUDENT LOCKERS
AT A LARGE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL. WHAT PROCESS WOULD YOU USE TO
TACKLE THIS PROJECT? DESCRIBE THE MOST IMPORTANT STEPS.
Proposed solution:
 I would first of all calculate the required dimensions for each locker.
 Then I would shift my focus on security issues. I would design a
system, to be implemented inside each locker, to allow the unlocking
through a Personal Identity Number (PIN) and face recognition
system.
 Otherwise, if the PIN number is entered wrong thrice or the face is
recognized as that of a trespasser, an alarm would be rung in the
security department of the college and the owner would be notified
through a SMS about the attempt of security violation.
DIMENSIONS
 The first important challenge is to
determine the amount of space to
be allotted to each of the lockers.
 The total area available would be
divided by the number of lockers
to be made.
 After getting the required area,
the dimensions would be chosen
to make the lockers look as
spacious as possible.

boards-fixing-new.html
SECURITY
 The next big challenge is to ensure the
security of the lockers.
 The lockers would have the facility of two
step verification.
1. First of all, the electronic system inside a
locker would ask for a special PIN
(Personal Identity Number) from anyone
trying to open the locker.
2. If the entered PIN is authentic, then a face
recognition system would authenticate the
face of the person standing in front of the
locker. This can be implemented using
OpenCV module burned on a
microcontroller.

Recognition-SDK.htm
WHAT IF SECURITY VIOLATION OCCURS??
 Otherwise, if the PIN number is entered wrong
thrice or the face is recognized as that of a
trespasser, an alarm would be rung in the
security department of the college and the
owner would be notified through a SMS about
the attempt of security violation.
 This can be implemented in a microcontroller.
The microcontroller would be connected to a
siren which would get triggered on security
violation.
 The task of sending a SMS can be done on the
platform of Arduino.

PEOPLE’S PERSPECTIVES
 I would also interact with the people of
the college, especially the target
community i.e. the prospective owners
of the lockers.
 I would ask for their opinions and
suggestions on the design of the
lockers and the features they would
love to have in their lockers.
