Writing academy workshop
Change often requires us to give up
our old, comfortable habits and ways of doing
things.
In today’s workshop, you will be able to: (1)
describe and differentiate between the two
new writing tasks (2) practice with a specific
task (3) understand the make-up of the new
writing rubric
 Read passages
 One task requires to choose one main idea
and support it with facts (3 paragraphs)
 Another task requires scholars to compare
and contrast (4 paragraphs)
 Typed and Timed (2 hours)
 Next Week for Fifth Grade
 Preparing scholars for the common core
 Development-Content
 Focus and Organization-Intro., Body,
Conclusion; Sequence
 Language-Transitional Words and Phrases;
Vocabulary; Sparking interest
 Conventions-Grammar and Mechanics
 SET-UP

3. One conclusion
 Add-Ins
1. At least one direct quotation
2. Everything supporting it needs to be summarized.
3. Include transitional words or phrases
4. Include a hook sentence for introduction
5. Use citations for referencing
 Favorite television show or song (simple)
 Practice exercise with passage (complex)
