Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 1959) was one of the most well known American architects of the early
modern movement. His extensive portfolio of built works around the country demonstrates the many
styles that he worked in over his important career, including his Prairie Style and his Usonian houses.
He is important to the spread of modern architecture because of his large collection of iconic built
works. Additionally, he trained many young architects that spread his design philosophies.1 Because
of his far reaching influence and impact, many of his works are considered among the most significant
examples of American architecture, and he is widely known by both designers and the general public
for his contributions to modern design.

Among his goals through his design career was the development of a democratic American
architecture style, which was cheap, available, and uniquely American in design. He also wanted to
discover the ideal state that combined individual liberty with rigid society. Designing a utopia (see U)
that was based on a unique social form was also among his goals.6 Early work in this style include his
four California block houses of 1923, which abstract the specific nature of the site into the design.
After his 1930s resurgence, he began work on Broadacre City (1934 5), his utopian vision for a new
life. The plan returned the city to a model based on individually owned tracts of land organized in a
rural democratic society. He believed this would free society from the tyranny of capitalism and allow
citizens to live in a pure unaffected state. He also made progress with his Usonian houses, which were

Throughout this semester, I have had the opportunity to analyze my behaviors and the aspects of my
life that have influenced those behaviors. There were several events that happened this semester that

that side of the family after moving out of state. Trusting another person to not leave and trusting what
they say was an extremely difficult task for me. I began dating my boyfriend and everything was fine
for the first couple of months, but after we both started to get busy, things became difficult. We both
worked and were going to school, so there was not much free time for us to spend time together. We
also never really got to know each other, we jumped head first into a relationship. During this time, I

Out of the three pieces that the Artiste Orchestra prepared to the Masquerade Concert, Halloween
Spooktacular, arranged by Bob Phillips, was definitely the hardest piece. Not only was it long, but it
was fast and had passages with difficult fingerings. By no means have I perfected this piece, but I used
several different practice techniques to help me master the fast tempo and difficult fingerings. The
technique that I used the most was probably using a metronome. I would start by playing a passage
very slowly, probably around 80 100 beats per minute depending on the passage. Then, once I had
mastered the passage at that speed, I would increase the tempo by 10 beats per minute and practice the
passage at that speed until I had mastered it. Then, I would increase the tempo another 10 beats per
minute and repeat the same process. I would continue this same process until I had mastered that
section at tempo. It was at these slower speeds that I could really focus on the little things, such as
intonation, rhythm, dynamics and articulation because by focusing on these elements as slow speeds,
it would be easier to bring them into the piece at faster speeds. Another practice technique I attempted
to use to practice Halloween Spooktacular was playing along with a recorded version of the piece.
This is a technique I used for several pieces last year because I find it helpful to hear all the parts of a

A few months ago, client FH refused his medication. His mood had deteriorated over the past few
days and there were signs of him beginning to self harm. A few grazes on his arm and he had shaved
the sides of his hair off. From his Behaviour Support Plan these were a few of the key signs of him
having a relapse. One day FH appeared to have lost all mental capacity, his language was obscene,
verbally aggressive to everyone and about everyone and he totally refused all medication. I telephoned
his previous placement, a hospital, and spoke with a Mental Health Nurse who knew him very well.
The Nurse agreed with me that FH was in a downward spiral of no return and it was imperative that he
take his medication or he will need hospitalisation again. The plan was that if FH did not take
medication by the following morning that the assessment team from the hospital would visit and try to

How can the view of a humanist change our perspective of World War II? Kurt Vonnegut, author of
Armageddon in Retrospect, did just that. From the viewpoint of a humanist that was a part of World
War II, I realized there was more to the war than just fighting. Vonnegut is able to tell nonfiction and
fiction short stories that give a different perspective and causes the reader to think deeper about the
war. Up until now, most, if not all, of the pieces I have read about World War II have been from either
a victim of the war or someone in the military, but not a humanist. Humanists want what is best for
everyone and want everyone to work together to agree. This is a different viewpoint because when I
think of World War II, I do not imagine the Axis working or agreeing with the Allies. I never stopped
to think that someone could be fighting in the war, but not agree with what they were doing, such as
killing civilians. Through experiencing World War II first hand, Vonnegut makes different
conclusions, reaches contrasting perspectives, and shows humanistic viewpoints throughout his short
stories. Vonnegut reaches conclusions about the war that are different than others. After reading some
of Armageddon in Retrospect, it seems that Vonnegut has a personal perspective to the war. He feels
sorrow and regret for the killings of people. Vonnegut is a humanist, so he behaves well and does not
expect consequences in the Afterlife. Him being a humanist is the reason he reaches certain
conclusions about the war. For example, in Wailing Shall Be in All Streets, Vonnegut mentions that he
would have rather saved Dresden and everyone should feel the same as him about all the cities on
Earth. I interpret his conclusion of the war as him thinking it was not necessary to kill many civilians,
particularly women and children. This shows that he wants to do good for people and he believes

what type of positions one could hold in the government or military, and housing is no different. There
were three common types of dwellings during that time; the insulae, the domus, and the villa.

I had seen Drew Struzan s artwork my entire life without ever realizing it. The iconic movie posters,
that commonly are displayed on the front of the movie cover, are easily recognized by most
Americans. Classic movies, such as Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Harry Potter, Hook, and Star
Wars have all had their covers graced by the iconic art of Drew Struzan. I was struck in awe as I came
to the realization that someone had actually drawn all of these realistic images that had been a part of

implementation of drug testing by companies grew in recent years. American workers have seen a
dramatic increase in the use of drug testing in the previous years. Drug testing is implemented to

Epic heroes have many common characteristics, many of which are portrayed by the hero Beowulf

He wanted everyone to know that he was the hero that was going to save the day. He was going to kill
Grendel because he was strong enough and brave enough to do so, as no one before him even stood a
chance. He defeated Grendel and his though his attitude was one of some arrogance, it seemed

The halls regaled in Old English Literature were safe havens for lords, warriors and clansmen alike,
the halls had a complex association with the self in these times. Exile was equivalent to certain death
to the Anglo Saxons; they were without protection from their lord or their clan and were wandering

full of light; whereas monsters are creatures that have to be covered by darkness (Shippey). Those
who seek safety within the walls of the hall shall be protected for the monsters that dwell beyond.
Heaven is a place often portrayed as being bathed in light much like the halls in Old English literature,
while exile is more closely aligned with the Christian idea of hell, a dark place void of protection and

message. The contrast between Beowulf and Grendel is almost as opposite as the halls and exile or
Heaven and Hell. Beowulf is celebrated and a great protector of those who follow behind him, bathed
in the light of the halls he spends time in. While Grendel is exiled with only his mother for
companionship and hides in the cloak of darkness, always stalking unable to withstand the light of the
halls. Stanley Baldwin touches on this idea in his companion book, CliffsNotes; Beowulf , he
describes Heorot as it is a place of light, warmth, and joy, contrasting with Grendel s morbid swamp as

heaven like structure is explored in Bede s Ecclesiastical History of the English People he talks of a

Beowulf is a story that has been told over thousands of years. Beowulf is the story of one of the
greatest warriors known to man. Even the man who claims to be the best of them all has a weakness
and has faced temptations. Beowulf s inability to control his lust for women, power, and pride is what
continues the deconstruction of the kingdom. The curse continues to rampage through the village of
the Danes due to man s weakness. One of the first seven deadly sins that Beowulf is faced with is the
theory of pride. Beowulf will do anything to further his reputation as the greatest warrior. He intends
to encourage people to think that he is the god like figure who can be trusted and cannot be faced by
temptation. In the text Beowulf says, Scarcely did I survive that with my life, the struggle beneath the

this to help encourage this idea that even in his weakest moment he was strong enough to come out of

Observational Learning Experience
If I were to have a five year old nephew and I were to have to teach him something I would mostly
likely use a combination of reinforcers and observational learning. Both positive and negative
punishment would be implemented in the teaching process, as well as the observational part so that
they all compliment each other. Most likely I would begin to teach him to play baseball and basketball
since most, including myself, start around that age. Although, I would not be as hard on him as my

Again I was always taught in more of a punishment type approach and again it worked for me, but I
believe it depends on the kid that is being taught and how they handle it. The same goes for basketball
as it did baseball, I would teach him the concept and objective of the game. When a kid this age is

Anti Transcendentalism In The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the 1800s, takes place in a New England
Puritan society in the 1600s. Hawthorne was an anti transcendentalist, the great nephew of John
Hathorne, who believed that all humans have an innate darkness within them. Hathorne was the only
judge who did not apologize for the Salem Witch Trials. The basis of anti transcendentalism also
included that the forest/nature is evil because that is where the devil lives, and that society was good
because it kept humans from giving in to their evil natures. Hawthorne uses symbolism, a literary

clergyman shrunk, with nervous dread, from the light missile. Detecting his emotion, Pearl clapped
