Volunteering at a local homeless shelter is an effective way to help the homeless. When volunteering, individuals can utilize their skills and hobbies, such as cooking, repair work, gardening or photography, to assist the shelter. This helps the homeless both directly through services provided, and indirectly by teaching skills that could aid in future employment. While monetary donations may seem helpful, many homeless would prefer food, clothes or assistance meeting basic needs. Corporals in the Marine Corps hold positions of leadership and responsibility, setting examples for more junior Marines through their conduct both on and off duty.
