THE WRITING PROCESS

     ENG 111-033W
    Prof. Ben Forsberg
      SPRING 2012
Prompts: PRE-WRITE (10 MINUTES)
(1) Describe how you dish food onto your plate, and
how you eat it (i.e. do you eat kinds of food first,
then move on, or alternate bites, etc.)
(2) Describe how you felt and what you were doing the
last time you listened to music. Use simile and
    metaphor.
(3) Being as descriptive as possible, detail all the steps
    in changing a flat tire
(4) Write about an experience you had at a wedding or
funeral, or some other special occasion. Tie
    scenery or action to emotion
(5) Describe in detail something you hate and what
you would like to do with it without explaining why
DRAFT (15 MINUTES)

Now that you have something down, you
have a better idea of what you want to talk
about. Spend some time writing a first
draft, but DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING.
Don’t edit for spelling, punctuation, or
grammar—just write!
REVISE (5 MINUTES)
Look over what you have so far. Do you
think you should switch sentences around,
or find better verbs, or delete anything?

Tip: replace as many “to be” verbs as
possible with specific verbs. I.e. replace
“the police lights were red and blue” with
“the police lights flashed [or pulsed] red
and blue.”
EDIT (5 MINUTES)

Check for spelling errors, bad syntax,
incorrect punctuation, etc.
REFLECT (5 MINUTES)

What has this exercise taught you
about your writing?
