Writing skills WJEC: Unit 2
Writing skills
0 Ability to write impersonally, clearly and securely, with impressive
accuracy by self-regulating.
0 Understands that punctuation is not an afterthought but integral to
thinking (eg parenthetical commas and dashes)
0 Uses semi-colons to separated linked or contrasting clauses, not the
comma splice; commas for parenthesis
0 Will have a mixture of precision and interestingness in writing, with a
rhythm which demonstrate a familiarity with good prose style
0 Demonstrate the way effective writers sometimes clarify and sometimes
mystify.
0 Will have lexical variety that avoids repetition, including adept
deployment of pronouns.
0 Understands the power of simplicity when juxtaposed with complexity
(rather than complicatedness)
0 Writes with fluency and panache, and a sense of personal voice and
commitment
Example…
Dear Mr Watson
Be assured that I’m writing this with my shirt fully tucked in,
wearing no unnecessary jewellery, and – of course – in shoes
rather than trainers.
I am assuming from the school’s uniform policy that such
attention to detail will help me to do better in my English
exam. That, after all, seems to be the overarching philosophy
of the English education system ‐ including your school – the
assumption that wearing uniform somehow makes us better
students, perhaps even better people…
Your turn…
0 Write an engaging opening for the following task:
Many older people don’t use computers or the internet, either because
they don’t see any value in them or because they are afraid of modern
technology.
You have been asked to give a talk to a group of older people to
persuade them to use computers and the internet.
Write what you would say. [20]
Opening two:
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I
am here today to persuade you that
computers and the internet are value
for money, a daily necessity and vital for
living in the modern world.
Computers that connect to the internet
can be very useful. For example, the
new craze is online shopping!
Computers can only make your lives
easier.
Opening one:
I can hear your thoughts – why do I
need to bother with new-fangled
technology? I am aware that some of
you may think instantly that I am
from a different generation, and that
what I say is not relevant to you; I
promise you, it is. I drive my
Grandparent’s mad when I talk to
them about how using technology
can change their lives; I do believe
they are beginning to take some
notice of me, especially after their
first internet food shop arrived! The
internet can be useful, enjoyable and
simple for everyone. Modern
technology is developing all the time,
but this isn’t bad because there is no
need for most people to keep up with
it, and quick development makes
technology cheaper.
