   ~THE BASICS~

“For me, writing is
exploration; and most of the
time, I'm surprised where the
journey takes me.”

Jack Dann, Writer, Editor, Writing Teacher
WHAT IS WRITING WORKSHOP?

                                  3/15/2012
    Writing Workshop is a
     framework for writing
instruction and practice in the
          classroom.
NECESSARY FOUNDATIONS FOR THE WRITING
             WORKSHOP

                                                        3/15/2012
“Writers do not write with words and
conventions alone; writers write above all with
meaning. Children will invest themselves
more in their writing if they are allowed-
indeed, if they are taught- to select their own
topics and to write about subjects that are
important to them.”

~Lucy Calkins- A Guide to Writing Workshop Grades 3-5
MY CORE BELIEFS ABOUT WRITING

                                            3/15/2012
Writers need:
 1) Time
 2) To separate composing from editing
 3) Response
 4) Responsibility

MY CORE BELIEFS ABOUT WRITING

                                            3/15/2012
Conditions for real writing:
 1) Personal (choice)
 2) Interpersonal (social)
 3) Time/space to do quality work
 4) Pay-off (purpose/feedback)
