This document provides details for a workshop assignment at the Manchester School of Art on the topic of materiality in landscape architecture. Students will analyze materials used in a small public space, such as concrete retaining walls, boundary walls, and railings. They will choose one element to study in depth, measuring, drawing, and photographing it on site. Research will then be conducted into the material and typology, covering its properties, uses, technical requirements, and precedents. The submission will include an annotated technical drawing and a research summary on the material and typology in the context of external space. The goal is to develop an understanding of both visible and hidden structural and technical issues involved in landscape design and construction.
