INTRODUCTION
 providing improved transportation technique.
 Ease and safe transportation, without loss of time.
 Monorails runs on single rail as against metro rail.
 It can be put up in any congested area
 Monorail is possible in congested areas.
 Connects arteries and veins of the city.
 The traffic is increasing day by day , which is making city not fit to live .
WHY MONORAIL ?
 Intermediate capacity guided urban transit system
 Requires less space / footprint
 System uses 0.80m wide beam to guide the train
 Allow Steeper Gradients & Negotiates Sharp Curves
 Derailment proof
 Feeder service to Metro and Suburban systems
 Faster transit connectivity
HISTORY OF MONO RAIL
Gyro Monorail in 1909
 Concept developed since 1800,first monorail in
Russia in 1820.
 First suspended monorail was demonstrated in 1886
in New Jersey and are closer in appearance to
modern monorail.
 Most famous was floating railway in 1901, in
Germany.
 Floating railway is still in daily use.
 Gyro monorail: true monorail ,use gyroscopic balancing system
 Due to massive expansion on road and air transport system after
second world war, monorail was the first one to be abandoned.
 But came again into existence due to its eco friendly characteristics.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 Magnetic Levitation (Maglev)
 Requires electromagnetic current to
generate magnetic field.
 Superconducting electric magnets in the
vehicle to levitate and propel the train
 An AC is ran through electromagnet coil
 Creates a magnetic field that attracts and
repels the superconducting magnets
 Reversing the direction of AC: braking.
 Varying intensity of AC : speed change
TYPES OF MONORAIL SYSTEM
Monorails are classified into two
 Straddle type and
 Suspended type Monorail System
Since the Straddle-type travels by straddling the track, its center of
gravity is situated above the track.
The Suspended-type on the other hand, is configured suspending from
the track, with its center of gravity under the track.
 Straddle-type Monorail System
 Suspended type Monorail System
TECHNICAL ASPECTS
POWER
Almost all modern monorails
are powered by electric motors.
contact wires or electrified
channels attached to or enclosed
in their guidance beams, but
diesel-powered monorail
systems also exist.
MONORAIL ENGINE
WHEEL ARRANGEMENT
SWITCHING
monorails are capable of more efficient
switching than in the past. With suspended
monorails, switching may be accomplished
by moving flanges inside the beam way to
shift trains to one line or another
CONSTRUCTION
 Dig a hole
 Drop in a pre-built support pylon,
 Truck in the track which was manufactured
offsite
 Lift into place.

ADVANTAGES
 Safety
 Reliability
 Smallest footprint
 Lower Cost
 Environmental Friendly
 Reduced Noise
 Aesthetics & Attractive
DISADVANTAGES
 To replace a section of track, the entire system needs to be shut down.
 The capacity-to-cost ratio is less
 Cannot run without electricity.
 Immediate exit is not possible
 Limited passenger capacity

MONORAIL MANUFACTURE
CONCLUSION
With the increase in the construction technology of Monorail ,it can
reduce the use of city buses in narrow and busy road and will provide
comfort to the passengers because of its suitability in the congested areas.
As it connect the arteries and veins of the city and proves to be
environmental friendly it is going to replace various modes of
transportation which affect environment. With the increase in the
population it is necessary for the advancement of transport technology in
order to provide systematic way of transportation in the near future.
