Mutations are changes in the DNA sequence that can occur in somatic or germ-line cells. Most mutations are neutral but some can be harmful, causing diseases like cancer, or beneficial by improving survival. There are different types of mutations including chromosome mutations, which involve changes to chromosomes like deletions, inversions, duplications, and translocations, and gene mutations, such as point mutations, insertions, deletions, and frameshift mutations, that change single nucleotides in genes. Chromosome nondisjunction can cause disorders like Down syndrome by producing gametes with an abnormal number of chromosomes.
