There are two species of manta rays: Manta birostris and Manta alfredi. Manta birostris is more rare in the Maldives, with only 12 individuals recorded compared to over 2,000 Manta alfredi. Both species can be identified individually by their unique ventral markings. Manta rays exhibit diurnal activity patterns, feeding at cleaning stations and reefs during the day and traveling offshore to deeper waters at night to feed. Their distribution ranges from circumtropical for Manta birostris and tropical Indo-Pacific waters for Manta alfredi, with both species observed in the Maldives.
