 Informational Report presents facts of a case,
problem, condition/situation without
analysis, interpretations or recommendations
 Functions of a writer – to collect, compile and
organize facts for the readers
 Ex: reports include conference reports,
seminar reports, trip reports, etc.
Analytical Report presents data with
interpretation and analysis.
 The writer has to analyze the facts of a case,
problem, and condition/situation objectively &
puts forward his/her conclusions, inferences, and
recommendations.
 He/she should evaluate information & make
appropriate inferences.
 Ex: project reports, feasibility reports, market
research reports, etc.
 All organizations including companies,
institutions, government department and
research establishments depend on routine
reports for various management decisions.
 Content – simple production information to
complex marketing research data
 These reports are informational or analytical
depending on the purpose.
 Ex: daily/weekly/monthly/ reports, sales reports,
etc
 Special Report conveys specific information
related to single condition, situation, problem or
occasion.
 Most important decisions in an organization
may be made on the basis of the information
contained in the special reports.
 Special reports could be information/analytical
 Ex: company launching new product based on a
report analyzing the market demand
 Ex: inquiry reports, research reports, thesis,
dissertation
 Oral reports - informal and face-to-face
presentation of information viz., reporting of
accidents, sales, production, joining, etc.
 Useful for presenting brief information
related to routine activities, projects,
development etc.
 Most organizations preferOR followed byWR
 Written reports are conventional
 Organizations use these reports to maintain
proper record for future use & reference.

Formal reports – investigates a problem,

description and discussion – fixed format with

Non formal reports – brief account of specific
business/professional activity
 Written to provide introductory information
about a routine affair
