 Scientific management is one of the earlier products of
classical school of thought.
 Introduced by F W Tylor.
 Scientific management refers to the application of science
to managerial practice.
 It involves the replacement of old rule of thumb method
by a scientific and systematic approach.

PHASE I : INTRODUCTORY PHASE
ACTIVITY 1 : GENERAL DISCUSSION
After the usual classroom practice the teacher begins the class by asking
some questions.
 What do you mean by principles of management?
 What are the importances of principles of management?
 What are the things needed for the success of a business?
Efficient method of production, scientific selection and training of
workers, proper allotment of duties, and attainment of harmony between
workers and management are needed for the success of a business.
Are these things are achieved through a normal management
system?
No. then how can we achieved it?
It can be achieved through the application of scientific management.
From the above general discussion the teacher and student enters into the
topic.
PHASE II : DEVELOPMENTAL PHASE
ACTIVITY 1 ; DIRECT INSTRUCTION
At this phase the teacher asks, are you heard about scientific
management? Where?
In Classical Management Theory.
Yes, scientific management is the highlight of Classical Management Theory. Then
the teacher explains the scientific management.
Concept to be consolidated.
Scientific management refers to the application of science to management
practices. It involves the replacement of old rule of thumb method or hit method or
mis method by a scientific and systematic approach in decision making.
Then the teacher explains the definition of scientific management.
Definition
According to F.W Tylor “scientific management means knowing exactly what you
want men to do and seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way.”
ACTIVITY 2 ; GROUP DISCUSSION
The teacher divides the whole class into four groups to discuss the aims
and objectives of scientific management with the help of handout containing the
meaning of scientific management.
HAND OUT
Scientific management refers to the application of science to the management
practices. It involves the replacement of old rule of thumb method, by a scientific
and systematic approach in decision making. It embraces the most efficient
method production, scientific selection and training of workers, proper allotment
of duties and work and attainment of harmony between workers and
management.
Teacher gives assistance to students. After five minutes, the teacher asks
to present their ideas and along with this teacher explains aims and objectives of
scientific management and writes it on the blackboard. The teacher adds some
other points also.
