The three most commonly spoken languages in the US are English, Spanish, and Chinese languages. While English and Spanish have remained the top languages, the proportions of Spanish and Asian language speakers have grown since 1980. Spanish speakers in particular are projected to continue increasing through 2020. Worldwide, Chinese dialects have the most native speakers, followed by Hindi, English, and Spanish. However, the number of US students learning foreign languages has decreased in recent years, pointing to a need for improved foreign language education among American adults whose jobs require interaction with Spanish speakers.
