Introduction to media use in the classroom In recent years, technology in the classroom has become easier to use and less expensive. A number of companies offer easy-to- use video -editing software for less than $100 and some even for free. Video -editing software enables students and faculty to integrate various types of media --such as text, video , audio, graphics, and animation--to create meaningful educational videos.
The use of digital video in the classroom to enhance learning. Digital video technology is a strong tool that can enable students to develop a variety of skills, including research, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and other higher-order critical-thinking skills. Student-produced digital video is appealing because it encourages active and problem-based learning . It also encourages student collaboration and authentic application Digital video integration can be ideal for learning complex skills because it exposes learners to problems, equipment, and events that cannot easily be demonstrated or understood verbally
Using digital video in the classroom
The use of digital media in the classroom to enhance learning Digital Media in the Classroom comes in a variety of media teachers can use to increase the learning potential of today's digital generation. Students can learn how they can use software, the Web, interactive games, desktop publishing, and digital accessories such as still and video cameras, microphones, lighting systems, scanners, and printers in their everyday classroom lessons. T Using digital media in the classroom teachers could integrate these digital tools with lessons in math, physical and social sciences, language arts, and career development.
Example of using digital media
Classroom Set Up The most basic classroom setup for a digital classroom which allows instructors to use technology as part of their teaching, is one in which there is a computer, a network connection (either wired or wireless) and a projection system. This allows instructors to perform demonstrations, present material, illustrate how to use software, show Web sites, etc. Cons for this setup: Each instructor must come into the classroom in advance and spend time setting up the machine. Since different instructors usually have different needs, it is quite possible that these needs conflict, and it will be necessary for an instructor to set up the machine before each use, which is time-consuming and tedious. Pros for an alternative setup : A better setup is one in which instructors can bring their own laptop to the classroom and connect to the network and a projection system. This way everything that the instructor wants to do with the laptop can be prepared in advance. Also, it isn't necessary to reset the equipment after each use, which is a great time-saver.
Different Types of Technology and their Educational Applications Many different types of technology can be used to support and enhance learning. Everything from video content and digital moviemaking to laptop computing and handheld technologies have been used in classrooms, and new uses of technology such as podcasting are constantly emerging. Various technologies deliver different kinds of content and serve different purposes in the classroom. For example, word processing and e-mail promote communication skills; database and spreadsheet programs promote organizational skills; and modeling software promotes the understanding of science and math concepts. It is important to consider how these electronic technologies differ and what characteristics make them important as vehicles for education. Each technology is likely to play a different role in students' learning. Two general distinctions can be made. Students can learn "from" computers—where technology used essentially as tutors and serves to increase students basic skills and knowledge; and can learn "with" computers—where technology is used a tool that can be applied to a variety of goals in the learning process and can serve as a resource to help develop higher order thinking, creativity and research skills .
