Assignment: Simple Still-Life
- 1. Painting 1/2 de Beaufort Simple Still Life Directions: 1. On a properly prepared painting surface that has been toned a mid-range value, draw the still life in vine charcoal. Once the composition is worked out, go over the vine with charcoal pencil and wipe away the vine with water. 2. Paying special attention to light and value, begin to fill in the highlights and deep shadows. Once a rough first layer has been established, please continue to refine the painting with previous layers. Please use one of the blending techniques that we discussed when necessary. 3. After your grisaille is complete, using transparent colors only (no cadmium or mineral pigments) apply a glaze of a warm or cool color to the entire piece. 4. Allow the glaze to dry and then fill in the shadows with a color that is complementary to the original glaze. 5. Refine your piece in previous layers. Student Learning Objectives: Demonstrate knowledge of proper surface preparation. Demonstrate ability to render simple still-life in neutral values. Demonstrate ability to properly glaze and add warm/cool color to the grisaille. Grading Rubric: CONCEPT (50 pts) : The project contains at least 5 objects, is composed of warm and cool colors, and is sufficiently naturalistic, PROFESSIONALISM (50 pts): The project is well executed, completely rendered, does not appear sloppy or haphazard, and shows a sufficient investment of time. 100 points total
