  • South Africa is rolling out Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable PrEP announced by Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, at the 12th SA National AIDS Conference. Supported by R520 million from The Global Fund, this twice-yearly injection could reshape HIV prevention for key populations. Aid for Aids (AfA), a subsidiary of AfroCentric Group, recently showed support for the move - calling it a ray of sunshine amid recent funding cuts from USAID and PEPFAR. AfA also highlighted the need for strong public-private partnerships to ensure Lenacapavir gets the support it deserves. “The future is not distant. We are building it now, for mothers, fathers, children and generations to come. Together, we will end Aids, eliminate its co-travellers and write a new chapter of health equity in South Africa,” – says Dr Phaahla. • Developmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are rising globally and South Africa is no exception. Between 2022 and 2024, ADHD diagnoses increased by 89% and autism by 73%, revealing a growing crisis in child developmental health. In a powerful new article, Ayesha Kriel, Functional Head of Disease and Medicine Management at MEDSCHEME HOLDINGS (an AfroCentric Group company) unpacks the emotional, financial, and systemic toll this crisis is taking on families. “The situation is further compounded in rural areas, where access to specialized paediatric services remains limited, forcing some families to travel long distances or simply not make the journey to care altogether,” - says Ayesha. This reality underscores the importance of value-based care solutions being explored by Medscheme, which aim to integrate diagnostic assessments, therapy, and caregiver education into comprehensive care packages. • This World Patient Safety Day, the World Health Organization shines a spotlight on children under the theme: “Safe care for every newborn and every child.” At AfroCentric Group, we are proud to support this mission through our partnership with Eluthandweni Maternity Health Services, where impactful work is being done to protect and nurture young lives. The organisation is driving safer care for children by providing: • Primary healthcare: Since 2023, Eluthandweni has been providing timely, quality care to unwell children through the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) programme. • Immunisation services: Through the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), children receive essential vaccines that protect them from preventable diseases and help build healthier communities. • Postnatal Clubs: In 15 clinics across Ekurhuleni South, East and North, HIV-exposed mother-child pairs are supported through holistic, integrated care that includes treatment, prevention and ongoing monitoring. Today, we celebrate the healthcare workers, partners and programmes that are safeguarding the future - one child at a time. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #Patients #ChildHealth #ChildCare

  • In today’s complex work environments, the ability to navigate tough conversations with empathy and purpose is a leadership imperative. At AfroCentric Group, a Sanlam Group company, we’re committed to building a culture where trust, accountability and empathy thrive and that starts with how we talk to each other, especially when it’s difficult. “When we take time to understand the full picture, we’re more likely to approach the conversation with empathy and clarity. It also helps us choose the right words, the right moment, and the right environment. A rushed chat in the corridor isn’t going to cut it,” - Hannes Dreyer, Senior Specialist: Organisational Effectiveness at AfroCentric Group. • August was Women’s Month in South Africa and AfroCentric Group used this moment to spotlight black women entrepreneurs whose work reflects meaningful transformation in healthcare.   AfroCentric invested over R11.6 million through its Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) and Socio-Economic Development (SED) programmes to support: • Tsepiso Malo Monamodi, who leads Oratile Kids, scaled her baby skincare and footwear brand with infrastructure funding and compliance support. • Sister Nonina Diphoko, behind Eluthandweni Maternity Services, delivers maternal care and mentorship 24/7 through her clinics and outreach programmes. • Sister Buhle Khumalo, who runs Mommy Bear Clinic, offers antenatal care, infant wellness services and health education in underserved communities. “AfroCentric’s investment in enterprise development programmes for black women and the youth is a deliberate and forward-looking strategy to transform the healthcare sector from the ground up,” says Fezeka Nompumza, Managing Executive for Clinical Risk and Advisory at MEDSCHEME HOLDINGS (an AfroCentric Group company) and ESD & SED Committee member.   As we close our Women’s Month spotlight, we share and carry forward the impact of these stories. • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is one of South Africa’s most urgent and devastating challenges. It affects women, children, men, LGBTQ+ individuals and entire communities - often in silence and without justice. AfroCentric Group is launching the ‘Colour Me Orange’ campaign, inspired by the United Nations's global movement to 'Orange the World', to raise awareness and advocate for a future free from violence. GBV thrives in silence, stigma and systemic failure but change begins when we speak up. This September, we encourage you to raise your voice, show support and stand with survivors. That is how you colour yourself orange. #ColourMeOrange: Speak. Support. Change #EndGBV #OrangeTheWorld #BreakTheSilence #AfrocentricGroup
