Time flies as it's been already over two weeks since Franziska Maisel and Max Tippner presented at #WRF25! Delving into the methodology used for the FutuRaM project's battery waste stream, they set the scene discussing the key components of our approach: 🔋 Timeframe: 2010 - 2050 🔋 Three distinct scenarios 🔋 MFA-based methodology 🔋 Recovery model Franziska and Max equally highlighted trends within the change of battery chemistries and focused on the potential for lithium recovery based on the different scenarios. Those present in the room, also had an exciting first look at our Urban Mine Platform. (More on that in the coming months!) After Crusade Project's successful participation in Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2025 Conference at Toronto, Canada, we are delighted to announce that we are going to participate in the forthcoming technical workshop of European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)/Joint Research Center (JRC) to be held at HADEA's building in Brussels (23-24/9/2025). The workshop is entitled: "Leveraging raw materials to strengthen EU competitiveness: from research to innovation". Crusade Project will be part of Session 4 (Focus on vehicles), to be chaired by Laura Petrov (HaDEA.B3), along with the participation of: 1. Nacef TAZI (JRC.D3) 2. Benedetta Nucci (EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM) 3. Maria Ljunggren (FutuRaM project) 4. Iakovos Yakoumis (Crusade Project) 4. Nader Akil (SOLMATE Horizon Europe project) 5. Lukas Feldmann (RAWCLIC project) The focus of the session will be on recent developments towards resilient, circular and sustainable vehicle and mobility value chains, discussing how key stakeholders from e.g. industry, academia, NGOs are developing innovative solution. Last week we held our consortium meeting in Skellefteå in Sweden. After two days of discussions, our team embarked on a field trip to learn more about the local mining history and current activities. Our hosts from Boliden guided us through numerous closed mines such as Rävliden, Näsliden, Udden, and Kjedträsk. We visited tailing sites like Hötjärn and Gillervattnet as well as a couple of active mines in Renström, Kankberg and Kirstineberg. All these sites are relevant to FutuRaM as it investigates the potential for the recovery of critical raw materials from historic mining waste, with our case studies focusing on one of these sites and other similar ones across Europe. We also squeezed in a visit to the SGU drill core archive, which houses a massive 4.5m metres of drill cores from across Sweden. Some as much as 100 years old! We were explained local customs while taking a breath-taking walk in the area (spotting reindeers nonetheless), and were welcomed for a traditional Sami dinner. After almost a week in Sápmi, we boarded the plane with our cups filled with unique experiences and engaging conversations. Thank you to Erik Ronne from Boliden for hosting our partners and to Ronald Arvidsson for his tremendous knowledge of the local geology! European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)

On the second day of the consortium meeting we covered: 💬 Feedback on the rebranded and updated Urban Mine Platform, FutuRaM’s secondary raw materials knowledge base. 📈 LCA and social LCA for different FutuRaM scenarios including batteries, WEEE, ELV, construction and demolition waste, SLASH and mining waste. 🔎 FAIR data in FutuRaM. 📄 The FutuRaM final report; the end of the project (Mid-2026) is closer than we think! Thank you to our hosts from Boliden (Erik Ronne) for making this trip successful and the project coordinators from the WEEE Forum (Sophie Colling, James Horne) for all the practical arrangements! Our last sit-down discussions may have wrapped today but it’s far from the end of our journey in Sweden! FutuRaM partners will visit several local mines (both closed and open); reprocessing facilities and other places of interest over the next two days. Hej, from Skellefteå, Sweden and the project’s highly anticipated bi-annual consortium meeting! Erik Ronne (Boliden) and James Horne (WEEE Forum) welcomed our close to 50 participants this morning introducing Boliden’s local activities before moving on to three different UNFC case studies, namely: ⛏️ Otanmäki ilmenite tailings project, presented by Tuomas Leskelä, Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK). (Learn more: https://lnkd.in/evp7QBvw) 🪫 Battery stocks and flows in Germany until 2050 in the explanation of Franziska Maisel and Max Tippner from Technische Universität Berlin. 💻 WEEECycling SAS’s site specific case study introduced by Serge Kimbel. Vera Susanne Rotter, Katharina K., and Hanjung (Rebecca) Hu from Technische Universität Berlin have also prepared a extensive workshop on extending FutuRaM’s waste stream composition assessment(s) to enable the evaluation of secondary raw materials recoverability. Taking advantage of being close to the heart of Boliden operations, we invited Åke Roos, Head of Waste Valorization Research at Business Area Smelters and former CEO of the Rönnskär smelter (Boliden) to talk more about smelters’ waste streams and commercial product development. Closing the day, Ulf Degerstedt, Manager of Process Development (Boliden), took us through their various processes focussing on secondary raw materials recovery from WEEE at the Rönnskär smelter.
