🔬🙏 Thank you GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility for the support, and a huge shout‑out to our amazing citizen scientists 😍 #CitizenScience #MINKA #GBIFSpain #MarineBiodiversity
Advancing marine biodiversity monitoring through #CitizenScience! 🪼 The Medusa a la Vista project—part of the #MINKA Citizen Science Observatory, led by EMBIMOS Research Group (ICM-CSIC), Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC—engages the public in documenting jellyfish and other pelagic organisms along the Catalan coast. Leveraging MINKA's online platform, participants upload geolocated images and observations, contributing to a growing marine biodiversity dataset. 🌊 🔬 Each submission undergoes collaborative validation, including expert-reviewed taxonomic ID before being mobilized to global data repositories such as GBIF. A recent dataset of almost four thousand medusa records from this project has been made accessible on GBIF with the support of #GBIFSpain! At Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC, we are leading one of the case studies in the European project ENHANCE, which applies a #OneHealth approach to coastal management. Using #CitizenScience, Copernicus Marine data, and #AI tools, we focus on Barcelona’s urban beach to explore the links between environmental quality, marine biodiversity, and public health. Our goal: to co-design decision-support tools for more sustainable and resilient coastal areas. 💪🏼

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫. 🔬🟢 As part of the #ENHANCE_eu project, researchers from EMBIMOS Research Group (ICM-CSIC), joined forces with local citizen science partners from Club Patí Vela de Barcelona for a coordinated sampling activity off the coast of #Barceloneta — precisely timed with a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite overpass. 🌊🔬 Using a mix of traditional and DIY tools — from Secchi disks to KduPRO optical sensors — the team collected 𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘭-𝘢, an indicator of algae concentration, and 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 (Kd), which shows how much sunlight penetrates the water. 🧪 These parameters are essential to monitor water quality, since reduced transparency often signals #pollution, algal blooms, or suspended sediments — all of which impact marine life and ecosystem health. 🎯 These ground-level measurements help us detect early signs of #algalblooms, pollution, or drops in water clarity, supporting public health, marine life, and coastal management. 🚤 A big 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐏𝐚𝐭í 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐝𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐚 for their support in making this fieldwork possible — a great example of how local communities and small businesses can actively contribute to science and #sustainability. 👉 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/dvgx23Fh #ENHANCE_eu EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme SingularLogic Stamatia Rizou CSIC University of Thessaly AMARANTHUS ENRICH GLOBAL G.A.C.

🌊 April was #CitizenScienceMonth, and we celebrated it in full force! Our research group from the Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC is a reference in marine #CitizenScience, with over 10 years of experience and more than a dozen completed #EUprojects. Day by day, we continue working for an open, inclusive, and impactful science, connected across Europe and beyond! How are we achieving this?🤔 🔹 By ANERIS Project – Improving marine biodiversity participatory monitoring technologies and shaping European standards. 🔹 By RIECS-Concept – Shaping the first pan-European research infrastructure for citizen science. 🔹 By GUARDEN – Empowering conservation through citizen-generated biodiversity and habitat data. 🔹 By #ECS (EU-Citizen.Science) – Strengthening the European citizen science community and supporting policymakers with knowledge, tools, and best practices. 🔹 By ProBleu – Promoting water literacy into school communities, through opening schooling and citizen science initiatives. 🔹 By PHAROS – Co-creating living labs based in citizen science in Arctic and Atlantic island communities to support ocean restoration. And what actions did we take this April? 👩🏫 We hosted hands-on workshops and training sessions with schools and teachers, helping embed citizen science into daily learning and exploration. 📷 We coorganise the #CityNatureChallenge Barcelona Edition, the #BioDiverCiutat, inviting citizens to document urban biodiversity, with Federació Catalana d'Activitats Subaquàtiques, Anèl·lides, serveis ambientals marins, SCEA - Societat Catalana d'Educació Ambiental, Aula Ambiental Bosc Turull, Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB), Institut de Sostenibilitat i Medi Ambient de Barcelona (ISMAB), among others! 🌊 We promote our flagship event, the BioMARathon, a major marine citizen science event that kicks off each year after Citizen Science Month. It invites citizens to explore and document coastal biodiversity through snorkelling, diving, and coastal walks. The BioMARathon has editions running in Catalonia, Portugal, and Italy, and plans are underway to expand to new regions💪🏼 All these efforts are linked through #MINKA, the citizen science observatory for biodiversity monitoring, which continues to grow thanks to an engaged community.💙 Since its launch, #MINKAsdg has gathered more than 400,000 biodiversity observations from thousands of contributors and has become a hub for more than 300 citizen science projects. It now holds one of the largest citizen-generated biodiversity datasets in the Mediterranean, serving both scientific research and environmental decision-making.💡 We believe that citizen science is not just about data—it’s about people. ✨ Thanks to all who participated, observed, shared, and cared. See you on the beach or in the water! 💦 #OneMillionActsofScience Mission Ocean, GenOcean, UNESCO Ocean CSIC ECSA - European Citizen Science Association SciStarter
