TBA21–Academy, Pivô Arte e Pesquisa, and LACO-IOUSP (Cátedra UNESCO para Sustentabilidade do Oceano) present Shifting Shores / Instabilidades Costeiras, a new artistic residency in Brazil. Co-commissioned within the framework of STARTS Buen-TEK, an initiative of the European Union, this five-month transdisciplinary program invites artists to investigate coastal transformations driven by climate change through situated and collaborative practices. The residency supports innovative, art-led research rooted in Indigenous knowledge, local technologies, and scientific methodologies, offering funding, mentorship, learning opportunities, and public engagement. The selected artist for this first edition is Licida Vidal , whose project “uma colher de sal e uma de açúcar: soluções para um oceano febril” (“a spoonful of salt and a spoonful of sugar: solutions for a feverish ocean”) explores key stressors in the coastal waters of Salvador and Ubatuba. Through the creation of ecosystemic sculptures, submerged and surface structures made from macroalgae and adsorbent materials, her work proposes new ways of "fishing" for pollutants such as CO₂, glyphosate, and microplastics. These living marine gardens merge ancestral fishing knowledge with bioremediation technologies. Artistic lead and curator: María Montero Sierra (TBA21–Academy) The residency involves the collaboration of two outstanding local experts: – Gabriela de Matos, architect, curator, and researcher specializing in Afro-Brazilian spatialities and decolonial practices, serving as Residency Translocal Expert. – Karla Brunet, artist, researcher, and professor whose interdisciplinary practice bridges art, environment, and technology, acting as Residency Community Representative. With this new residency, TBA21–Academy expands its commitment to site-specific artistic research, continuing its long-term engagement with oceanic and ecological futures, now in the coastal territories of Brazil. + Info here: https://lnkd.in/dXd4f2PJ #TBA21Academy #ShiftingShores #STARTSBuenTEK #ArtScience #OceanFutures #ArtistResidency #LicidaVidal #Pivô #IOUSP #LACO #ClimateJustice #EcologicalArt #Transdisciplinary #ContemporaryArt #Brazil #CoastalCommunities

‘Palestine is everywhere because it names a political subject of radical universal emancipation,’ writes teacher and writer Nasser Abourahme. In ‘Palestine is everywhere,’ writers, thinkers, poets and artists map the Palestinian struggle for liberation and its global resonances. Dispatches from Gaza, essays, poems, protest chronicles, images, drawings, and letters from prison reflect upon solidarity and the right to self-determination. Together, they emerge as precious acts of resistance and serve as a call to action in the face of genocide. Amid a world-historical moment marked by unknowability and loss, this collection offers essential reading for those interested in Palestinian liberation. With contributions from Alaa Abd El-Fattah, Nasser Abourahme, Amal Al-Nakhala, Muhammad al-Zaqzouq, Maisara Baroud, Ahmed Bassiouny, Houria Bouteldja, Anees Ghanima, Sahar Khalifeh, Laleh Khalili, Lujayn, Mira Mattar, Lina Meruane, Mohammed Mhawish, Nahil Mohana, Rahul Rao, Nasser Rabah, Adam Rouhana, and Ahmad Zaghmouri. Translations by Salma Alhafi, Wiam El-Tamami , Ibrahim Fawzy, Rebecca Ruth Gould, Katharine Halls, Nada Hodali, Sarah Rifky, and Andrea Rosenberg. ‘Palestine is everywhere’ is edited by Skye Arundhati Thomas, with Edwin Nasr and Gloria Habsburg. The book is designed by Farah Fayyad with cover art by Avian D’Souza. All royalties from this project will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). “‘Terraphilia’ means two things: love as affect, burning, emotions. But it is also responsibility and reciprocity. Love itself is radical receptivity, being vulnerable.” — Daniela Zyman, Curator of the exhibition. ‘Terraphilia. Beyond the Human in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections’ was presented to the media and institutions. Daniel Otero Torres, Asunción Molinos Gordo, Regina de Miguel, Diego Delas, Elyla, Marina Otero Verzier, Sissel Tolaas, Brad Kahlhamer and Diana Policarpo attended to the presentation and took the media questions, explaining the exhibition as an act of reconnection. Terrafilia will be on view from July 1 to September 24 at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.

It is with profound sorrow that we mourn the passing of our dear friend and close collaborator, Rémi Parmentier. Rémi was a remarkable thinker, a tireless advocate, and a true Ocean visionary. More than a pioneering environmentalist and former leader at Greenpeace, he was a steadfast ally whose sharp intellect, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication helped shape the global movement for ocean protection. As co-founder of The Varda Group and coordinator of the Let's Be Nice to the Ocean initiative, Rémi worked alongside us to reimagine humanity’s relationship with the ocean—always with fierce clarity, deep compassion, and boundless courage. His proposal of the Ocean Protection Principle was not just a policy idea; it was a transformative call to action. In a time when political responses are too often slow and incremental, Rémi dared to shift the paradigm: to insist that the burden of proof should lie not with those defending the ocean, but with those seeking to exploit it. This bold, values-driven reframing was emblematic of his visionary leadership and moral clarity. We are profoundly grateful for the depth of his vision, the power of his convictions, and the lightness and warmth he brought to every encounter. Rémi’s legacy will continue to guide and galvanize our efforts for a just and thriving ocean future. Our hearts are with his beloved family, friends, and all those around the world who had the privilege of working alongside him and being inspired by his life’s mission.
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our friend and colleague Rémi Parmentier. Rémi was a dedicated environmentalist, a pioneering leader at Greenpeace, the visionary co-founder of The Varda Group, and coordinator of the Let's Be Nice to the Ocean initiative. Rémi passed away on 26 June 2025, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to the preservation of our planet and, especially, our ocean. Our deepest sympathy goes to his beloved family during this time of immense loss. A condolences website is being set up to all those who wish to share memories of Rémi and offer their thoughts to their family and friends. In a separate post, we will invite all who knew him and were touched by his work to join in celebrating his enduring legacy. Read the full statement in the attachment.

Thinking with the planet, not about it. This powerful shift in perspective is the central thread running through 'Terrafilia', an exhibition presented by the Museo Thyssen and curated by Daniela Zyman (TBA21), opening on July 1st. Far from a traditional exhibition, Terrafilia invites us to engage with nature as an active participant — challenging anthropocentric views and proposing new modes of planetary coexistence. The show brings together diverse works, practices, and perspectives that foreground the agency of nature and envision a more entangled, reciprocal relationship between all forms of life. It offers a space to pause, reflect, and reimagine our role within the Earth’s ecosystems. The architectural layout, designed by Marina Otero Verzier, takes the form of a winding path — a metaphor for a non-linear, intuitive journey shaped by the rhythms and intelligence of nature itself. Her design helps cultivate a deeper sensorial and conceptual connection with the themes of the exhibition. We also recognize the invaluable contribution of Finsa, whose commitment to sustainability has been essential. Their responsibly sourced wood materials were fundamental in giving form to this vision and creating an environment that resonates with the show’s ethos. 'Terrafilia' is more than an exhibition — it’s a collective invitation to imagine new ways of thinking, living, and relating with the planet we all share. #Terrafilia #MuseoThyssen #TBA21 #DanielaZyman #MarinaOtero #GrupoFinsa #Sustainability #EcologicalThinking #ExhibitionDesign #ArtAndEcology #PlanetaryFutures #DesignWithNature #ClimateCulture #Cosmopolitics

From underwater archaeology and regenerative reforestation to pyroecologies and ocean governance, Organismo—our experimental independent study program by TBA21–Academy—bridges research, theory, and speculation to cultivate experimentation, critical thinking, and radical imagination. This year’s five case studies continue the search for living answers through critical ecology and collective work. Far from being conclusions, the participants' presentations mark the beginning of ongoing processes—each case remains open to long-term feedback and the potential to evolve into larger-scale projects. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partners Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología, FECYT, Abadia Retuerta and to Joan L., scientist at BSC, for generously sharing his research and allowing himself to be transformed by the processes of Organismo. Special thanks to the artists who contributed to this edition: Laure Prouvost, Sonia Fernández Pan, Walid Raad, The Otolith Group, and Open Source Publishing—your work has deeply enriched the journey. We are also deeply grateful to our director at TBA21–Academy, Eduardo Castillo Vinuesa and to the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza for making this edition of Organismo possible through their vision and continued support. Stay tuned to our channels for more on the outcomes and next steps of these powerful case studies. #Organismo #TBA21Academy #IndependentStudy #Ecology #ArtAndResearch #RadicalImagination #OceanGovernance #Pyroecology #UnderwaterArchaeology #Reforestation

At UNOC3, the arts didn’t stand on the sidelines—they led the way For the first time in the history of the United Nations Ocean Conference, art and culture were placed at the heart of ocean governance. TBA21 delivered over 20 cultural programs in Nice, from exhibitions and performances to radical late-night conversations that challenged how we relate to the Ocean and each other. “Culture must be recognized not just as soft power, but as a transformative force for ecological justice.” — Markus Reymann, Co-Director of TBA21 From launching the Ocean Protection Principle with global leaders to helping expand the EU’s #EU4OceanCoalition, TBA21 is proving what we’ve always believed: artists, designers, and cultural workers are essential to shaping just and sustainable futures. As we look ahead to Mundiacult (Barcelona) and COP30 (Belém), we invite creative thinkers, institutions, and cultural leaders to join us. Let’s make imagination part of policy. Let’s make culture part of climate solutions.
