Este documento explica los usos de "no" y "not" en inglés. "No" se usa para negar en forma cortante o antes de sustantivos sin artículo. "Not" se usa antes de sustantivos con artículo, palabras como "any-many-much-enough", cuando un verbo queda sobreentendido, y para negativizar verbos secundarios. La doble negación no es aceptable en inglés.

- 2. Usos de Not 1 Se usa “not” antes de un sustantivo acompañado de artículo. Además cuando se niega el verbo principal se requiere el uso de un auxiliar simple. ● I do not have the money No tengo el dinero ● She does not have the pet Ella no tiene la mascota 2 Se usa “not” antes de las palabras “any - many - much - enough” Any Cualquiera +.not = Ninguno Many Muchos + not = No muchos Much Mucho + not = No mucho Enough suficiente + not = No lo suficiente ● Not many students are bored No muchos estudiantes están aburridos ● She did not give me enough time Ella no me dio suficiente tiempo 3 Se usa “not” cuando un verbo queda sobre entendido. ● They are thin not fat Ellos son flacos, no gordos ● He is passive not dynamic Él es pasivo, no dinámico 4 Se usa “not” para negativizar un verbo que no es el principal. ● He tells me not to scold the babe Él me dijo que no regañe al bebé ● She wants him not to speak Ella no quiere que el hable Nota: En inglés no se admite la doble negación en una misma frase. ● I don’t see anybody / I see nobody No veo a nadie ● I want nothing / I do not want anything No quiero nada ● She does go nowhere / She doesn’t go anywhere Ella no va a ninguna parte
