PRESS RELEASE #Expedition Sailing4Science DiverSea visits #Ålesund (26-28 August)🌊🌍 We are a diverse team of marine scientists, sailors, students and citizen scientists, brought together through the Sailing4Science (S4S) concept and the EU project DiverSea, and will be visiting Ålesund on 26-27 August. The project's goal is to monitor marine biodiversity and find out why biological diversity in the sea is in decline — what we call impacts and stress factors, such as pollution.     Exhibition and ‘Open Boat and Tent’ at the quay in the city centre (27 August)   After wonderful days in Stavanger and Bergen with many visitors in boats and tents, we hope to offer the residents of Ålesund and visitors the same experience at the quay during our stop. Research expedition DiverSea – from Smøgen in Sweden up to Trondheim.  We display what we have with us in our own tent, and the public can view information material and examples of research equipment and results. We love talking to people on the quay and see this as a great opportunity to offer the residents of Ålesund and visitors a fun activity with a focus on the sea. We adapt our presentations for both children and adults, in several languages. And they're off! On 22 July, a DiverSea expedition set sail from Smögen, Sweden. The expedition's scientists, students, and sailors are in for a five-week expedition along the coast up to Trondheim, Norway. They will sample the coastal waters south of the Norwegian border, capturing the signal of the Baltic surface current and the Danish Jutland current. The expedition is a partnership with Sailing 4 Science, Hrimfare, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and University of Gothenburg (UGOT). The team will use a combination of satellite imaging, underwater sensors, and other groundbreaking technologies and techniques to track biodiversity loss in marine Nordic ecosystems and monitor changes in the color of coastal water, which can indicate broad ecological shifts. Along the way, they'll visit coastal locations along the route for showcase events to raise awareness about biodiversity loss and other ocean-related challenges and engage with the local communities. Join the team! We are seeking a Consultant to lead a 5-month feasibility study on the future of the BiOES (UNESCO Biosphere Observatories for Ocean Ecosystem Sustainability) project. This consultancy will explore how existing IOC initiatives, such as OBIS, the Ocean Data Information System (ODIS), and the OceanTeacher Global Academy (OTGA), as well as technical capacity in Flanders, can be leveraged to support the development of a future UNESCO Biosphere Observatories for Ocean Ecosystem Sustainability (BiOES) project.
