I am deeply proud of the exceptional work carried out everyday by our team at the Mater Hospital and it is especially rewarding to see their commitment recognised through our nominations at this year’s Irish Healthcare Awards. The Mater Hospital has been shortlisted in four categories: - Hospital Project of the Year: An investigation of the effectiveness of Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) meetings in an Irish teaching hospital - Best Use of Digital Health & IT: Implementation of quality assurance & equipment management software in radiology - Innovation in Healthcare and Medicine: Establishing the first AI Centre in an Irish healthcare setting - Healthcare Education Event of the Year: ESHG Precision Genomic Medicine Hybrid Workshop These projects reflect the innovation, expertise and dedication of our teams across the hospital. The Mater Hospital was honoured to welcome world-renowned neurosurgeon and acclaimed author Dr. Henry Marsh for a talk. During his visit, Dr. Marsh shared invaluable insights from his forty-year career in neurosurgery, reflecting on both the challenges and the rewards of the profession. He emphasised the vital role of clear and compassionate communication in delivering effective healthcare. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Marsh for his time and generosity in sharing his expertise, which left a lasting impression on our team. His visit reaffirmed our commitment to excellence and supporting our team to learn, grow and innovate.

Congratulations to our own Dr John Campion, Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist who was awarded the Best Productivity Award at the HSE Spark Awards, 2025. The project was Trans-Nasal Endoscopy to Improve Patient Experience and Resource Utilisation which introduced transnasal endoscopy (TNE) as a safer, more patient-friendly, and sustainable alternative to traditional sedated gastroscopy. Today I was really pleased to see our hard work come to fruition! We, at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital were the first public hospital in the Ireland to use Tutoplast Fascia Lata in our Paul tube glaucoma procedures. I thank Deborah Burns , MSN ,RN ,ACNS , CCRN and the whole procurement team for making this happen, as well as RTI SURGICAL and Victor Waide for their support. This will lead to a significant reduction in our dependance on donor tissue which currently comes from the USA, considerable cost savings, and is one step further to reducing our carbon footprint at the Mater!
